مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ
مَا
What
ٱلْحَآقَّةُ

(is) the Inevitable Reality
What is the Inevitable Reality?

69:3
Ayah 69:3
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ
وَمَآ
wamā
And what
أَدْرَىٰكَ
adrāka
will make you know
مَا
what
ٱلْحَآقَّةُ
l-ḥāqatu
(is) the Inevitable Reality
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?

69:4
Ayah 69:4
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ
كَذَّبَتْ
kadhabat
Denied
ثَمُودُ
thamūdu
Thamud
وَعَادٌۢ
waʿādun
and Aad
بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ
bil-qāriʿati
the Striking Calamity
Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].

69:5
Ayah 69:5
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ
فَأَمَّا
fa-ammā
So as for
ثَمُودُ
thamūdu
Thamud
فَأُهْلِكُوا۟
fa-uh'likū
they were destroyed
بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ
bil-ṭāghiyati
by the overpowering (blast)
So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].

69:6
Ayah 69:6
وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ
وَأَمَّا
wa-ammā
And as for
عَادٌ
ʿādun
Aad
فَأُهْلِكُوا۟
fa-uh'likū
they were destroyed
بِرِيحٍ
birīḥin
by a wind
صَرْصَرٍ
ṣarṣarin
screaming
عَاتِيَةٍ
ʿātiyatin
violent
And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming,1 violent wind

69:7
Ayah 69:7
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَـٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ
سَخَّرَهَا
sakharahā
Which He imposed
عَلَيْهِمْ
ʿalayhim
upon them
سَبْعَ
sabʿa
(for) seven
لَيَالٍ
layālin
nights
وَثَمَـٰنِيَةَ
wathamāniyata
and eight
أَيَّامٍ
ayyāmin
days
حُسُومًا
ḥusūman
(in) succession
فَتَرَى
fatarā
so you would see
ٱلْقَوْمَ
l-qawma
the people
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
صَرْعَىٰ
ṣarʿā
fallen
كَأَنَّهُمْ
ka-annahum
as if they were
أَعْجَازُ
aʿjāzu
trunks
نَخْلٍ
nakhlin
(of) date-palms
خَاوِيَةٍ
khāwiyatin
hollow
Which He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.

69:8
Ayah 69:8
فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةٍ
فَهَلْ
fahal
Then do
تَرَىٰ
tarā
you see
لَهُم
lahum
of them
مِّنۢ
min
any
بَاقِيَةٍ
bāqiyatin
remains
Then do you see of them any remains?

69:9
Ayah 69:9
وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُ بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ
وَجَآءَ
wajāa
And came
فِرْعَوْنُ
fir'ʿawnu
Firaun
وَمَن
waman
and (those)
قَبْلَهُۥ
qablahu
before him
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُ
wal-mu'tafikātu
and the overturned cities
بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ
bil-khāṭi-ati
with sin
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities1 with sin.

69:10
Ayah 69:10
فَعَصَوْا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَّابِيَةً
فَعَصَوْا۟
faʿaṣaw
And they disobeyed
رَسُولَ
rasūla
(the) Messenger
رَبِّهِمْ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
فَأَخَذَهُمْ
fa-akhadhahum
so He seized them
أَخْذَةً
akhdhatan
(with) a seizure
رَّابِيَةً
rābiyatan
exceeding
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].

69:11
Ayah 69:11
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ
إِنَّا
innā
Indeed, We
لَمَّا
lammā
when
طَغَا
ṭaghā
overflowed
ٱلْمَآءُ
l-māu
the water
حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْ
ḥamalnākum
We carried you
فِى
in
ٱلْجَارِيَةِ
l-jāriyati
the sailing (ship)
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship1

69:12
Ayah 69:12
لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٌ وَٰعِيَةٌ
لِنَجْعَلَهَا
linajʿalahā
That We might make it
لَكُمْ
lakum
for you
تَذْكِرَةً
tadhkiratan
a reminder
وَتَعِيَهَآ
wataʿiyahā
and would be conscious of it
أُذُنٌ
udhunun
an ear
وَٰعِيَةٌ
wāʿiyatun
conscious
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.

69:13
Ayah 69:13
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ
فَإِذَا
fa-idhā
Then when
نُفِخَ
nufikha
is blown
فِى
in
ٱلصُّورِ
l-ṣūri
the trumpet
نَفْخَةٌ
nafkhatun
a blast
وَٰحِدَةٌ
wāḥidatun
single
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast

69:14
Ayah 69:14
وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَٰحِدَةً
وَحُمِلَتِ
waḥumilati
And are lifted
ٱلْأَرْضُ
l-arḍu
the earth
وَٱلْجِبَالُ
wal-jibālu
and the mountains
فَدُكَّتَا
fadukkatā
and crushed
دَكَّةً
dakkatan
(with) a crushing
وَٰحِدَةً
wāḥidatan
single
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -

69:15
Ayah 69:15
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ
fayawma-idhin
Then (on) that Day
وَقَعَتِ
waqaʿati
will occur
ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
l-wāqiʿatu
the Occurrence
Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,

69:16
Ayah 69:16
وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِىَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ
وَٱنشَقَّتِ
wa-inshaqqati
And will split
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
l-samāu
the heaven
فَهِىَ
fahiya
so it
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
(is on) that Day
وَاهِيَةٌ
wāhiyatun
frail
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.1

69:17
Ayah 69:17
وَٱلْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرْجَآئِهَا ۚ وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌ
وَٱلْمَلَكُ
wal-malaku
And the Angels
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalā
(will be) on
أَرْجَآئِهَا
arjāihā
its edges
وَيَحْمِلُ
wayaḥmilu
and will bear
عَرْشَ
ʿarsha
(the) Throne
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
فَوْقَهُمْ
fawqahum
above them
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌ
thamāniyatun
eight
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].

69:18
Ayah 69:18
يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
That Day
تُعْرَضُونَ
tuʿ'raḍūna
you will be exhibited
لَا
not
تَخْفَىٰ
takhfā
will be hidden
مِنكُمْ
minkum
among you
خَافِيَةٌ
khāfiyatun
any secret
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.1

69:19
Ayah 69:19
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقْرَءُوا۟ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
فَأَمَّا
fa-ammā
Then as for
مَنْ
man
(him) who
أُوتِىَ
ūtiya
is given
كِتَـٰبَهُۥ
kitābahu
his record
بِيَمِينِهِۦ
biyamīnihi
in his right hand
فَيَقُولُ
fayaqūlu
will say
هَآؤُمُ
hāumu
Here
ٱقْرَءُوا۟
iq'raū
read
كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
kitābiyah
my record
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!

69:20
Ayah 69:20
إِنِّى ظَنَنتُ أَنِّى مُلَـٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ
إِنِّى
innī
Indeed, I
ظَنَنتُ
ẓanantu
was certain
أَنِّى
annī
that I
مُلَـٰقٍ
mulāqin
(will) meet
حِسَابِيَهْ
ḥisābiyah
my account
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."

69:21
Ayah 69:21
فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
فَهُوَ
fahuwa
So he
فِى
(will be) in
عِيشَةٍ
ʿīshatin
a life
رَّاضِيَةٍ
rāḍiyatin
pleasant
So he will be in a pleasant life -

69:22
Ayah 69:22
فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
فِى
In
جَنَّةٍ
jannatin
a Garden
عَالِيَةٍ
ʿāliyatin
elevated
In an elevated garden,

69:23
Ayah 69:23
قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ
قُطُوفُهَا
quṭūfuhā
Its clusters of fruits
دَانِيَةٌ
dāniyatun
hanging near
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.

69:24
Ayah 69:24
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَآ أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَيَّامِ ٱلْخَالِيَةِ
كُلُوا۟
kulū
Eat
وَٱشْرَبُوا۟
wa-ish'rabū
and drink
هَنِيٓـًٔۢا
hanīan
(in) satisfaction
بِمَآ
bimā
for what
أَسْلَفْتُمْ
aslaftum
you sent before you
فِى
in
ٱلْأَيَّامِ
l-ayāmi
the days
ٱلْخَالِيَةِ
l-khāliyati
past
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth1 in the days past."

69:25
Ayah 69:25
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
وَأَمَّا
wa-ammā
But as for
مَنْ
man
(him) who
أُوتِىَ
ūtiya
is given
كِتَـٰبَهُۥ
kitābahu
his record
بِشِمَالِهِۦ
bishimālihi
in his left hand
فَيَقُولُ
fayaqūlu
will say
يَـٰلَيْتَنِى
yālaytanī
O! I wish
لَمْ
lam
not
أُوتَ
ūta
I had been given
كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
kitābiyah
my record
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

69:26
Ayah 69:26
وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ
وَلَمْ
walam
And not
أَدْرِ
adri
I had known
مَا
what
حِسَابِيَهْ
ḥisābiyah
(is) my account
And had not known what is my account.

69:27
Ayah 69:27
يَـٰلَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ
يَـٰلَيْتَهَا
yālaytahā
O! I wish it
كَانَتِ
kānati
had been
ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ
l-qāḍiyata
the end
I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.1

69:28
Ayah 69:28
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّى مَالِيَهْ ۜ
مَآ
Not
أَغْنَىٰ
aghnā
has availed
عَنِّى
ʿannī
me
مَالِيَهْ
māliyah
my wealth
My wealth has not availed me.

69:29
Ayah 69:29
هَلَكَ عَنِّى سُلْطَـٰنِيَهْ
هَلَكَ
halaka
Is gone
عَنِّى
ʿannī
from me
سُلْطَـٰنِيَهْ
sul'ṭāniyah
my authority
Gone from me is my authority."1

69:30
Ayah 69:30
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
خُذُوهُ
khudhūhu
Seize him
فَغُلُّوهُ
faghullūhu
and shackle him
[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.

69:31
Ayah 69:31
ثُمَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
ٱلْجَحِيمَ
l-jaḥīma
(into) the Hellfire
صَلُّوهُ
ṣallūhu
burn him
Then into Hellfire drive him.

69:32
Ayah 69:32
ثُمَّ فِى سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَٱسْلُكُوهُ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
فِى
into
سِلْسِلَةٍ
sil'silatin
a chain
ذَرْعُهَا
dharʿuhā
its length
سَبْعُونَ
sabʿūna
(is) seventy
ذِرَاعًا
dhirāʿan
cubits
فَٱسْلُكُوهُ
fa-us'lukūhu
insert him
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."

69:33
Ayah 69:33
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, he
كَانَ
kāna
was
لَا
not
يُؤْمِنُ
yu'minu
believing
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
in Allah
ٱلْعَظِيمِ
l-ʿaẓīmi
the Most Great
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,

69:34
Ayah 69:34
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
وَلَا
walā
And (did) not
يَحُضُّ
yaḥuḍḍu
feel the urge
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
on
طَعَامِ
ṭaʿāmi
(the) feeding
ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
l-mis'kīni
(of) the poor
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.

69:35
Ayah 69:35
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ ٱلْيَوْمَ هَـٰهُنَا حَمِيمٌ
فَلَيْسَ
falaysa
So not
لَهُ
lahu
for him
ٱلْيَوْمَ
l-yawma
today
هَـٰهُنَا
hāhunā
here
حَمِيمٌ
ḥamīmun
any devoted friend
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend

69:36
Ayah 69:36
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ
وَلَا
walā
And not
طَعَامٌ
ṭaʿāmun
any food
إِلَّا
illā
except
مِنْ
min
from
غِسْلِينٍ
ghis'līnin
(the) discharge of wounds
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;

69:37
Ayah 69:37
لَّا يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَ
لَّا
Not
يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ
yakuluhu
will eat it
إِلَّا
illā
except
ٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَ
l-khāṭiūna
the sinners
None will eat it except the sinners.

69:38
Ayah 69:38
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ
فَلَآ
falā
But nay
أُقْسِمُ
uq'simu
I swear
بِمَا
bimā
by what
تُبْصِرُونَ
tub'ṣirūna
you see
So I swear by what you see

69:39
Ayah 69:39
وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
وَمَا
wamā
And what
لَا
not
تُبْصِرُونَ
tub'ṣirūna
you see
And what you do not see

69:40
Ayah 69:40
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, it (is)
لَقَوْلُ
laqawlu
surely (the) Word
رَسُولٍ
rasūlin
(of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٍ
karīmin
noble
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the word of a noble Messenger.

69:41
Ayah 69:41
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تُؤْمِنُونَ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
هُوَ
huwa
it
بِقَوْلِ
biqawli
(is the) word
شَاعِرٍ
shāʿirin
(of) a poet
قَلِيلًا
qalīlan
little
مَّا
(is) what
تُؤْمِنُونَ
tu'minūna
you believe
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.

69:42
Ayah 69:42
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ
وَلَا
walā
And not
بِقَوْلِ
biqawli
(it is the) word
كَاهِنٍ
kāhinin
(of) a soothsayer
قَلِيلًا
qalīlan
little
مَّا
(is) what
تَذَكَّرُونَ
tadhakkarūna
you take heed
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.

69:43
Ayah 69:43
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
تَنزِيلٌ
tanzīlun
(It is) a revelation
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّ
rabbi
(the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
l-ʿālamīna
(of) the worlds
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

69:44
Ayah 69:44
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ
وَلَوْ
walaw
And if
تَقَوَّلَ
taqawwala
he (had) fabricated
عَلَيْنَا
ʿalaynā
against Us
بَعْضَ
baʿḍa
some
ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ
l-aqāwīli
sayings
And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,
— The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab
69:45
Ayah 69:45
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِٱلْيَمِينِ
لَأَخَذْنَا
la-akhadhnā
Certainly We (would) have seized
مِنْهُ
min'hu
him
بِٱلْيَمِينِ
bil-yamīni
by the right hand
We would have seized him by the right hand;1

69:46
Ayah 69:46
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ ٱلْوَتِينَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
لَقَطَعْنَا
laqaṭaʿnā
certainly We (would) have cut off
مِنْهُ
min'hu
from him
ٱلْوَتِينَ
l-watīna
the aorta
Then We would have cut from him the aorta.1

69:47
Ayah 69:47
فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَـٰجِزِينَ
فَمَا
famā
And not
مِنكُم
minkum
from you
مِّنْ
min
any
أَحَدٍ
aḥadin
one
عَنْهُ
ʿanhu
[from him]
حَـٰجِزِينَ
ḥājizīna
(who could) prevent (it)
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.

69:48
Ayah 69:48
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
وَإِنَّهُۥ
wa-innahu
And indeed, it
لَتَذْكِرَةٌ
latadhkiratun
(is) surely a reminder
لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
lil'muttaqīna
for the Allah-fearing
And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.

69:49
Ayah 69:49
وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ
وَإِنَّا
wa-innā
And indeed, We
لَنَعْلَمُ
lanaʿlamu
surely know
أَنَّ
anna
that
مِنكُم
minkum
among you
مُّكَذِّبِينَ
mukadhibīna
(are) deniers
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.

Ayah 69:50
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
وَإِنَّهُۥ
wa-innahu
And indeed, it
لَحَسْرَةٌ
laḥasratun
(is) surely a regret
عَلَى
ʿalā
upon
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
l-kāfirīna
the disbelievers
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.

69:51
Ayah 69:51
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
وَإِنَّهُۥ
wa-innahu
And indeed, it (is)
لَحَقُّ
laḥaqqu
surely (the) truth
ٱلْيَقِينِ
l-yaqīni
(of) certainty
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.

Ayah 69:52
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
فَسَبِّحْ
fasabbiḥ
So glorify
بِٱسْمِ
bi-is'mi
(the) name
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
ٱلْعَظِيمِ
l-ʿaẓīmi
the Most Great
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
