70:1
Ayah 70:1
سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ
سَأَلَ
sa-ala
Asked
سَآئِلٌۢ
sāilun
a questioner
بِعَذَابٍ
biʿadhābin
about a punishment
وَاقِعٍ
wāqiʿin
bound to happen
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen1

70:2
Ayah 70:2
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
lil'kāfirīna
To the disbelievers
لَيْسَ
laysa
not
لَهُۥ
lahu
of it
دَافِعٌ
dāfiʿun
any preventer
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.

70:3
Ayah 70:3
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ
مِّنَ
mina
From
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
ذِى
dhī
Owner
ٱلْمَعَارِجِ
l-maʿāriji
(of) the ways of ascent
[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascent.

70:4
Ayah 70:4
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
تَعْرُجُ
taʿruju
Ascend
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ
l-malāikatu
the Angels
وَٱلرُّوحُ
wal-rūḥu
and the Spirit
إِلَيْهِ
ilayhi
to Him
فِى
in
يَوْمٍ
yawmin
a Day
كَانَ
kāna
[is]
مِقْدَارُهُۥ
miq'dāruhu
its measure
خَمْسِينَ
khamsīna
(is) fifty
أَلْفَ
alfa
thousand
سَنَةٍ
sanatin
year(s)
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.

70:5
Ayah 70:5
فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
فَٱصْبِرْ
fa-iṣ'bir
So be patient
صَبْرًا
ṣabran
a patience
جَمِيلًا
jamīlan
good
So be patient with gracious patience.

70:6
Ayah 70:6
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا
إِنَّهُمْ
innahum
Indeed, they
يَرَوْنَهُۥ
yarawnahu
see it
بَعِيدًا
baʿīdan
(as) far off
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,

70:7
Ayah 70:7
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا
وَنَرَىٰهُ
wanarāhu
But We see it
قَرِيبًا
qarīban
near
But We see it [as] near.

70:8
Ayah 70:8
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
تَكُونُ
takūnu
will be
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
l-samāu
the sky
كَٱلْمُهْلِ
kal-muh'li
like molten copper
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,1

70:9
Ayah 70:9
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ
وَتَكُونُ
watakūnu
And will be
ٱلْجِبَالُ
l-jibālu
the mountains
كَٱلْعِهْنِ
kal-ʿih'ni
like wool
And the mountains will be like wool,1

70:10
Ayah 70:10
وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
وَلَا
walā
And not
يَسْـَٔلُ
yasalu
will ask
حَمِيمٌ
ḥamīmun
a friend
حَمِيمًا
ḥamīman
(about) a friend
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,

70:11
Ayah 70:11
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ
yubaṣṣarūnahum
They will be made to see each other
يَوَدُّ
yawaddu
Would wish
ٱلْمُجْرِمُ
l-muj'rimu
the criminal
لَوْ
law
if
يَفْتَدِى
yaftadī
he (could be) ransomed
مِنْ
min
from
عَذَابِ
ʿadhābi
(the) punishment
يَوْمِئِذٍۭ
yawmi-idhin
(of) that Day
بِبَنِيهِ
bibanīhi
by his children
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children.

70:12
Ayah 70:12
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ
waṣāḥibatihi
And his spouse
وَأَخِيهِ
wa-akhīhi
and his brother
And his wife and his brother

70:13
Ayah 70:13
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ
wafaṣīlatihi
And his nearest kindred
ٱلَّتِى
allatī
who
تُـْٔوِيهِ
tu'wīhi
sheltered him
And his nearest kindred who shelter him.

70:14
Ayah 70:14
وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
فِى
(is) on
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍi
the earth
جَمِيعًا
jamīʿan
all
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
يُنجِيهِ
yunjīhi
it (could) save him
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

70:15
Ayah 70:15
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
كَلَّآ
kallā
By no means
إِنَّهَا
innahā
Indeed, it (is)
لَظَىٰ
laẓā
surely a Flame of Hell
No!1 Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],

70:16
Ayah 70:16
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ
نَزَّاعَةً
nazzāʿatan
A remover
لِّلشَّوَىٰ
lilshawā
of the skin of the head
A remover of exteriors.1

70:17
Ayah 70:17
تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
تَدْعُوا۟
tadʿū
Inviting
مَنْ
man
(him) who
أَدْبَرَ
adbara
turned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰ
watawallā
and went away
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

70:18
Ayah 70:18
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ
وَجَمَعَ
wajamaʿa
And collected
فَأَوْعَىٰٓ
fa-awʿā
and hoarded
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.

70:19
Ayah 70:19
۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
l-insāna
the man
خُلِقَ
khuliqa
was created
هَلُوعًا
halūʿan
anxious
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

70:20
Ayah 70:20
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
إِذَا
idhā
When
مَسَّهُ
massahu
touches him
ٱلشَّرُّ
l-sharu
the evil
جَزُوعًا
jazūʿan
distressed
When evil touches him, impatient,

70:21
Ayah 70:21
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا
وَإِذَا
wa-idhā
And when
مَسَّهُ
massahu
touches him
ٱلْخَيْرُ
l-khayru
the good
مَنُوعًا
manūʿan
withholding
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

70:22
Ayah 70:22
إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
إِلَّا
illā
Except
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
l-muṣalīna
those who pray
Except the observers of prayer -

70:23
Ayah 70:23
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
Those who
هُمْ
hum
[they]
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
at
صَلَاتِهِمْ
ṣalātihim
their prayer
دَآئِمُونَ
dāimūna
(are) constant
Those who are constant in their prayer

70:24
Ayah 70:24
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
فِىٓ
in
أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ
amwālihim
their wealth
حَقٌّ
ḥaqqun
(is) a right
مَّعْلُومٌ
maʿlūmun
known
And those within whose wealth is a known right1

70:25
Ayah 70:25
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
لِّلسَّآئِلِ
lilssāili
For the one who asks
وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
wal-maḥrūmi
and the deprived
For the petitioner and the deprived -

70:26
Ayah 70:26
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
يُصَدِّقُونَ
yuṣaddiqūna
accept (the) truth
بِيَوْمِ
biyawmi
(of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ
l-dīni
(of) the Judgment
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

70:27
Ayah 70:27
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
هُم
hum
[they]
مِّنْ
min
of
عَذَابِ
ʿadhābi
(the) punishment
رَبِّهِم
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَ
mush'fiqūna
(are) fearful
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -

70:28
Ayah 70:28
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
عَذَابَ
ʿadhāba
(the) punishment
رَبِّهِمْ
rabbihim
(of) your Lord
غَيْرُ
ghayru
(is) not
مَأْمُونٍ
mamūnin
to be felt secure (of)
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

70:29
Ayah 70:29
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
هُمْ
hum
[they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْ
lifurūjihim
their modesty
حَـٰفِظُونَ
ḥāfiẓūna
(are) guardians
And those who guard their private parts

70:30
Ayah 70:30
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
إِلَّا
illā
Except
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalā
from
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ
azwājihim
their spouses
أَوْ
aw
or
مَا
what
مَلَكَتْ
malakat
they possess
أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ
aymānuhum
rightfully
فَإِنَّهُمْ
fa-innahum
then indeed, they
غَيْرُ
ghayru
(are) not
مَلُومِينَ
malūmīna
blameworthy
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess,1 for indeed, they are not to be blamed -

70:31
Ayah 70:31
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ
فَمَنِ
famani
But whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰ
ib'taghā
seeks
وَرَآءَ
warāa
beyond
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
that
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
fa-ulāika
then those
هُمُ
humu
[they]
ٱلْعَادُونَ
l-ʿādūna
(are) the transgressors
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -

70:32
Ayah 70:32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
هُمْ
hum
[they]
لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ
li-amānātihim
of their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْ
waʿahdihim
and their promise
رَٰعُونَ
rāʿūna
(are) observers
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive.

70:33
Ayah 70:33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
هُم
hum
[they]
بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ
bishahādātihim
in their testimonies
قَآئِمُونَ
qāimūna
stand firm
And those who are in their testimonies upright

70:34
Ayah 70:34
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
وَٱلَّذِينَ
wa-alladhīna
And those who
هُمْ
hum
[they]
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
on
صَلَاتِهِمْ
ṣalātihim
their prayer
يُحَافِظُونَ
yuḥāfiẓūna
keep a guard
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:

70:35
Ayah 70:35
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
ulāika
Those
فِى
(will be) in
جَنَّـٰتٍ
jannātin
Gardens
مُّكْرَمُونَ
muk'ramūna
honored
They will be in gardens,1 honored.

70:36
Ayah 70:36
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ
فَمَالِ
famāli
So what is with
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
كَفَرُوا۟
kafarū
disbelieve
قِبَلَكَ
qibalaka
before you
مُهْطِعِينَ
muh'ṭiʿīna
(they) hasten
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],

70:37
Ayah 70:37
عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
عَنِ
ʿani
On
ٱلْيَمِينِ
l-yamīni
the right
وَعَنِ
waʿani
and on
ٱلشِّمَالِ
l-shimāli
the left
عِزِينَ
ʿizīna
(in) separate groups
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?1

70:38
Ayah 70:38
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
أَيَطْمَعُ
ayaṭmaʿu
Does long
كُلُّ
kullu
every
ٱمْرِئٍ
im'ri-in
person
مِّنْهُمْ
min'hum
among them
أَن
an
that
يُدْخَلَ
yud'khala
he enters
جَنَّةَ
jannata
a Garden
نَعِيمٍ
naʿīmin
(of) Delight
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?

70:39
Ayah 70:39
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
كَلَّآ
kallā
By no means
إِنَّا
innā
Indeed, We
خَلَقْنَـٰهُم
khalaqnāhum
[We] have created them
مِّمَّا
mimmā
from what
يَعْلَمُونَ
yaʿlamūna
they know
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.1

70:40
Ayah 70:40
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ
فَلَآ
falā
But nay
أُقْسِمُ
uq'simu
I swear
بِرَبِّ
birabbi
by (the) Lord
ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ
l-mashāriqi
(of) the risings
وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ
wal-maghāribi
and the settings
إِنَّا
innā
that We
لَقَـٰدِرُونَ
laqādirūna
(are) surely Able
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings1 that indeed We are able

70:41
Ayah 70:41
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
عَلَىٰٓ
ʿalā
[On]
أَن
an
to
نُّبَدِّلَ
nubaddila
[We] replace
خَيْرًا
khayran
(with) better
مِّنْهُمْ
min'hum
than them
وَمَا
wamā
and not
نَحْنُ
naḥnu
We
بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
bimasbūqīna
(are) to be outrun
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

70:42
Ayah 70:42
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ
فَذَرْهُمْ
fadharhum
So leave them
يَخُوضُوا۟
yakhūḍū
(to) converse vainly
وَيَلْعَبُوا۟
wayalʿabū
and amuse themselves
حَتَّىٰ
ḥattā
until
يُلَـٰقُوا۟
yulāqū
they meet
يَوْمَهُمُ
yawmahumu
their Day
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
which
يُوعَدُونَ
yūʿadūna
they are promised
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

70:43
Ayah 70:43
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
يَخْرُجُونَ
yakhrujūna
they will come out
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ
l-ajdāthi
the graves
سِرَاعًا
sirāʿan
rapidly
كَأَنَّهُمْ
ka-annahum
as if they (were)
إِلَىٰ
ilā
to
نُصُبٍ
nuṣubin
a goal
يُوفِضُونَ
yūfiḍūna
hastening
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.1

70:44
Ayah 70:44
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ
خَـٰشِعَةً
khāshiʿatan
Humbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ
abṣāruhum
their eyesights
تَرْهَقُهُمْ
tarhaquhum
will cover them
ذِلَّةٌ
dhillatun
humiliation
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
That
ٱلْيَوْمُ
l-yawmu
(is) the Day
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
which
كَانُوا۟
kānū
they were
يُوعَدُونَ
yūʿadūna
promised
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
