72:1
Ayah 72:1
قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًا
قُلْ
qul
Say
أُوحِىَ
ūḥiya
It has been revealed
إِلَىَّ
ilayya
to me
أَنَّهُ
annahu
that
ٱسْتَمَعَ
is'tamaʿa
listened
نَفَرٌ
nafarun
a group
مِّنَ
mina
of
ٱلْجِنِّ
l-jini
the jinn
فَقَالُوٓا۟
faqālū
and they said
إِنَّا
innā
Indeed, we
سَمِعْنَا
samiʿ'nā
heard
قُرْءَانًا
qur'ānan
a Quran
عَجَبًا
ʿajaban
amazing
Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

72:2
Ayah 72:2
يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًا
يَهْدِىٓ
yahdī
It guides
إِلَى
ilā
to
ٱلرُّشْدِ
l-rush'di
the right way
فَـَٔامَنَّا
faāmannā
so we believe
بِهِۦ
bihi
in it
وَلَن
walan
and never
نُّشْرِكَ
nush'rika
we will associate
بِرَبِّنَآ
birabbinā
with our Lord
أَحَدًا
aḥadan
anyone
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.

72:3
Ayah 72:3
وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا
وَأَنَّهُۥ
wa-annahu
And that He
تَعَـٰلَىٰ
taʿālā
Exalted is
جَدُّ
jaddu
(the) Majesty
رَبِّنَا
rabbinā
(of) our Lord
مَا
not
ٱتَّخَذَ
ittakhadha
He has taken
صَـٰحِبَةً
ṣāḥibatan
a wife
وَلَا
walā
and not
وَلَدًا
waladan
a son
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son

72:4
Ayah 72:4
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًا
وَأَنَّهُۥ
wa-annahu
And that he
كَانَ
kāna
used to
يَقُولُ
yaqūlu
speak
سَفِيهُنَا
safīhunā
the foolish among us
عَلَى
ʿalā
against
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
شَطَطًا
shaṭaṭan
an excessive transgression
And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees]1 has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.

72:5
Ayah 72:5
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
ظَنَنَّآ
ẓanannā
thought
أَن
an
that
لَّن
lan
never
تَقُولَ
taqūla
will say
ٱلْإِنسُ
l-insu
the men
وَٱلْجِنُّ
wal-jinu
and the jinn
عَلَى
ʿalā
against
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
كَذِبًا
kadhiban
any lie
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.

72:6
Ayah 72:6
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا
وَأَنَّهُۥ
wa-annahu
And that
كَانَ
kāna
(there) were
رِجَالٌ
rijālun
men
مِّنَ
mina
among
ٱلْإِنسِ
l-insi
mankind
يَعُوذُونَ
yaʿūdhūna
who sought refuge
بِرِجَالٍ
birijālin
in (the) men
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱلْجِنِّ
l-jini
the jinn
فَزَادُوهُمْ
fazādūhum
so they increased them
رَهَقًا
rahaqan
(in) burden
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].

72:7
Ayah 72:7
وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًا
وَأَنَّهُمْ
wa-annahum
And that they
ظَنُّوا۟
ẓannū
thought
كَمَا
kamā
as
ظَنَنتُمْ
ẓanantum
you thought
أَن
an
that
لَّن
lan
never
يَبْعَثَ
yabʿatha
will raise
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahu
Allah
أَحَدًا
aḥadan
anyone
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].

72:8
Ayah 72:8
وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
لَمَسْنَا
lamasnā
sought to touch
ٱلسَّمَآءَ
l-samāa
the heaven
فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا
fawajadnāhā
but we found it
مُلِئَتْ
muli-at
filled (with)
حَرَسًا
ḥarasan
guards
شَدِيدًا
shadīdan
severe
وَشُهُبًا
washuhuban
and flaming fires
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.

72:9
Ayah 72:9
وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلْـَٔانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
كُنَّا
kunnā
used to
نَقْعُدُ
naqʿudu
sit
مِنْهَا
min'hā
there in
مَقَـٰعِدَ
maqāʿida
positions
لِلسَّمْعِ
lilssamʿi
for hearing
فَمَن
faman
but (he) who
يَسْتَمِعِ
yastamiʿi
listens
ٱلْـَٔانَ
l-āna
now
يَجِدْ
yajid
will find
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
شِهَابًا
shihāban
a flaming fire
رَّصَدًا
raṣadan
waiting
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,1 but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.

72:10
Ayah 72:10
وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
لَا
not
نَدْرِىٓ
nadrī
we know
أَشَرٌّ
asharrun
whether evil
أُرِيدَ
urīda
is intended
بِمَن
biman
for (those) who
فِى
(are) in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍi
the earth
أَمْ
am
or
أَرَادَ
arāda
intends
بِهِمْ
bihim
for them
رَبُّهُمْ
rabbuhum
their Lord
رَشَدًا
rashadan
a right path
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.

72:11
Ayah 72:11
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that [we]
مِنَّا
minnā
among us
ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ
l-ṣāliḥūna
(are) the righteous
وَمِنَّا
waminnā
and among us
دُونَ
dūna
(are) other than
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
that
كُنَّا
kunnā
We
طَرَآئِقَ
ṭarāiqa
(are on) ways
قِدَدًا
qidadan
different
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.1

72:12
Ayah 72:12
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
ظَنَنَّآ
ẓanannā
[we] have become certain
أَن
an
that
لَّن
lan
never
نُّعْجِزَ
nuʿ'jiza
we will cause failure
ٱللَّهَ
l-laha
(to) Allah
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍi
the earth
وَلَن
walan
and never
نُّعْجِزَهُۥ
nuʿ'jizahu
we can escape Him
هَرَبًا
haraban
(by) flight
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.

72:13
Ayah 72:13
وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that [we]
لَمَّا
lammā
when
سَمِعْنَا
samiʿ'nā
we heard
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
l-hudā
the Guidance
ءَامَنَّا
āmannā
we believed
بِهِۦ
bihi
in it
فَمَن
faman
And whoever
يُؤْمِنۢ
yu'min
believes
بِرَبِّهِۦ
birabbihi
in his Lord
فَلَا
falā
then not
يَخَافُ
yakhāfu
he will fear
بَخْسًا
bakhsan
any loss
وَلَا
walā
and not
رَهَقًا
rahaqan
any burden
And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.1

72:14
Ayah 72:14
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًا
وَأَنَّا
wa-annā
And that we
مِنَّا
minnā
among us
ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ
l-mus'limūna
(are) Muslims
وَمِنَّا
waminnā
and among us
ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ
l-qāsiṭūna
(are) unjust
فَمَنْ
faman
And whoever
أَسْلَمَ
aslama
submits
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
fa-ulāika
then those
تَحَرَّوْا۟
taḥarraw
have sought
رَشَدًا
rashadan
(the) right path
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust.1 And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.

72:15
Ayah 72:15
وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا
وَأَمَّا
wa-ammā
And as for
ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ
l-qāsiṭūna
the unjust
فَكَانُوا۟
fakānū
they will be
لِجَهَنَّمَ
lijahannama
for Hell
حَطَبًا
ḥaṭaban
firewood
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'

72:16
Ayah 72:16
وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًا
وَأَلَّوِ
wa-allawi
And that if
ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟
is'taqāmū
they had remained
عَلَى
ʿalā
on
ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ
l-ṭarīqati
the Way
لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم
la-asqaynāhum
surely We (would) have given them to drink
مَّآءً
māan
water
غَدَقًا
ghadaqan
(in) abundance
And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].

72:17
Ayah 72:17
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ
linaftinahum
That We might test them
فِيهِ
fīhi
therein
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يُعْرِضْ
yuʿ'riḍ
turns away
عَن
ʿan
from
ذِكْرِ
dhik'ri
the Remembrance
رَبِّهِۦ
rabbihi
(of) his Lord
يَسْلُكْهُ
yasluk'hu
He will make him enter
عَذَابًا
ʿadhāban
a punishment
صَعَدًا
ṣaʿadan
severe
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord1 He will put into arduous punishment.

72:18
Ayah 72:18
وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًا
وَأَنَّ
wa-anna
And that
ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ
l-masājida
the masjids
لِلَّهِ
lillahi
(are) for Allah
فَلَا
falā
so (do) not
تَدْعُوا۟
tadʿū
call
مَعَ
maʿa
with
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
أَحَدًا
aḥadan
anyone
And [He revealed] that the masjids1 are for Allāh, so do not invoke2 with Allāh anyone.

72:19
Ayah 72:19
وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا
وَأَنَّهُۥ
wa-annahu
And that
لَمَّا
lammā
when
قَامَ
qāma
stood up
عَبْدُ
ʿabdu
(the) slave
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
(of) Allah
يَدْعُوهُ
yadʿūhu
calling (upon) Him
كَادُوا۟
kādū
they almost
يَكُونُونَ
yakūnūna
became
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhi
around him
لِبَدًا
libadan
a compacted mass
And that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."1

72:20
Ayah 72:20
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا
قُلْ
qul
Say
إِنَّمَآ
innamā
Only
أَدْعُوا۟
adʿū
I call upon
رَبِّى
rabbī
my Lord
وَلَآ
walā
and not
أُشْرِكُ
ush'riku
I associate
بِهِۦٓ
bihi
with Him
أَحَدًا
aḥadan
anyone
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."

72:21
Ayah 72:21
قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا
قُلْ
qul
Say
إِنِّى
innī
Indeed, I
لَآ
(do) not
أَمْلِكُ
amliku
possess
لَكُمْ
lakum
for you
ضَرًّا
ḍarran
any harm
وَلَا
walā
and not
رَشَدًا
rashadan
right path
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."

72:22
Ayah 72:22
قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا
قُلْ
qul
Say
إِنِّى
innī
Indeed I
لَن
lan
never
يُجِيرَنِى
yujīranī
can protect me
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
أَحَدٌ
aḥadun
anyone
وَلَنْ
walan
and never
أَجِدَ
ajida
can I find
مِن
min
from
دُونِهِۦ
dūnihi
besides Him
مُلْتَحَدًا
mul'taḥadan
any refuge
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.

72:23
Ayah 72:23
إِلَّا بَلَـٰغًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا
إِلَّا
illā
But
بَلَـٰغًا
balāghan
(the) notification
مِّنَ
mina
from
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
Allah
وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ
warisālātihi
and His Messages
وَمَن
waman
And whoever
يَعْصِ
yaʿṣi
disobeys
ٱللَّهَ
l-laha
Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
warasūlahu
and His Messenger
فَإِنَّ
fa-inna
then indeed
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
نَارَ
nāra
(is the) Fire
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
(of) Hell
خَـٰلِدِينَ
khālidīna
(they will) abide
فِيهَآ
fīhā
therein
أَبَدًا
abadan
forever
But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.

72:24
Ayah 72:24
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا
حَتَّىٰٓ
ḥattā
Until
إِذَا
idhā
when
رَأَوْا۟
ra-aw
they see
مَا
what
يُوعَدُونَ
yūʿadūna
they are promised
فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ
fasayaʿlamūna
then they will know
مَنْ
man
who
أَضْعَفُ
aḍʿafu
(is) weaker
نَاصِرًا
nāṣiran
(in) helpers
وَأَقَلُّ
wa-aqallu
and fewer
عَدَدًا
ʿadadan
(in) number
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.

72:25
Ayah 72:25
قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا
قُلْ
qul
Say
إِنْ
in
Not
أَدْرِىٓ
adrī
I know
أَقَرِيبٌ
aqarībun
whether is near
مَّا
what
تُوعَدُونَ
tūʿadūna
you are promised
أَمْ
am
or (whether)
يَجْعَلُ
yajʿalu
will appoint
لَهُۥ
lahu
for it
رَبِّىٓ
rabbī
my Lord
أَمَدًا
amadan
a (distant) term
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."

72:26
Ayah 72:26
عَـٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا
عَـٰلِمُ
ʿālimu
(The) All-Knower
ٱلْغَيْبِ
l-ghaybi
(of) the unseen
فَلَا
falā
so not
يُظْهِرُ
yuẓ'hiru
He reveals
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
from
غَيْبِهِۦٓ
ghaybihi
His unseen
أَحَدًا
aḥadan
(to) anyone
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone

72:27
Ayah 72:27
إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًا
إِلَّا
illā
Except
مَنِ
mani
whom
ٱرْتَضَىٰ
ir'taḍā
He has approved
مِن
min
of
رَّسُولٍ
rasūlin
a Messenger
فَإِنَّهُۥ
fa-innahu
and indeed, He
يَسْلُكُ
yasluku
makes to march
مِنۢ
min
from
بَيْنِ
bayni
before
يَدَيْهِ
yadayhi
him
وَمِنْ
wamin
and from
خَلْفِهِۦ
khalfihi
behind him
رَصَدًا
raṣadan
a guard
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers1

72:28
Ayah 72:28
لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا
لِّيَعْلَمَ
liyaʿlama
That He may make evident
أَن
an
that
قَدْ
qad
indeed
أَبْلَغُوا۟
ablaghū
they have conveyed
رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ
risālāti
(the) Messages
رَبِّهِمْ
rabbihim
(of) their Lord
وَأَحَاطَ
wa-aḥāṭa
and He has encompassed
بِمَا
bimā
what
لَدَيْهِمْ
ladayhim
(is) with them
وَأَحْصَىٰ
wa-aḥṣā
and He takes account
كُلَّ
kulla
(of) all
شَىْءٍ
shayin
things
عَدَدًۢا
ʿadadan
(in) number
That he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know1 that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
