74:1
Ayah 74:1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا
yāayyuhā
O you
ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
l-mudathiru
who covers himself
O you who covers himself [with a garment],1

Ayah 74:2
قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
قُمْ
qum
Stand up
فَأَنذِرْ
fa-andhir
and warn
Arise and warn.

Ayah 74:3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
وَرَبَّكَ
warabbaka
And your Lord
فَكَبِّرْ
fakabbir
magnify
And your Lord glorify.

74:4
Ayah 74:4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
وَثِيَابَكَ
wathiyābaka
And your clothing
فَطَهِّرْ
faṭahhir
purify
And your clothing purify.

74:5
Ayah 74:5
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
وَٱلرُّجْزَ
wal-ruj'za
And uncleanliness
فَٱهْجُرْ
fa-uh'jur
avoid
And uncleanliness1 avoid.

74:6
Ayah 74:6
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
وَلَا
walā
And (do) not
تَمْنُن
tamnun
confer favor
تَسْتَكْثِرُ
tastakthiru
(to) acquire more
And do not confer favor to acquire more1.

74:7
Ayah 74:7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
وَلِرَبِّكَ
walirabbika
And for your Lord
فَٱصْبِرْ
fa-iṣ'bir
be patient
But for your Lord be patient.

74:8
Ayah 74:8
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ
فَإِذَا
fa-idhā
Then when
نُقِرَ
nuqira
is blown
فِى
in
ٱلنَّاقُورِ
l-nāqūri
the trumpet
And when the trumpet is blown,

74:9
Ayah 74:9
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
فَذَٰلِكَ
fadhālika
That
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
Day
يَوْمٌ
yawmun
(will be) a Day
عَسِيرٌ
ʿasīrun
difficult
That Day will be a difficult day

74:10
Ayah 74:10
عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ
عَلَى
ʿalā
For
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
l-kāfirīna
the disbelievers
غَيْرُ
ghayru
not
يَسِيرٍ
yasīrin
easy
For the disbelievers - not easy.

74:11
Ayah 74:11
ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا
ذَرْنِى
dharnī
Leave Me
وَمَنْ
waman
and whom
خَلَقْتُ
khalaqtu
I created
وَحِيدًا
waḥīdan
alone
Leave Me with the one I created alone1

74:12
Ayah 74:12
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
وَجَعَلْتُ
wajaʿaltu
And I granted
لَهُۥ
lahu
to him
مَالًا
mālan
wealth
مَّمْدُودًا
mamdūdan
extensive
And to whom I granted extensive wealth

74:13
Ayah 74:13
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
وَبَنِينَ
wabanīna
And children
شُهُودًا
shuhūdan
present
And children present [with him]

74:14
Ayah 74:14
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا
وَمَهَّدتُّ
wamahhadttu
And I spread
لَهُۥ
lahu
for him
تَمْهِيدًا
tamhīdan
ease
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

74:15
Ayah 74:15
ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
يَطْمَعُ
yaṭmaʿu
he desires
أَنْ
an
that
أَزِيدَ
azīda
I (should) add more
Then he desires that I should add more.

74:16
Ayah 74:16
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا
كَلَّآ
kallā
By no means
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, he
كَانَ
kāna
has been
لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا
liāyātinā
to Our Verses
عَنِيدًا
ʿanīdan
stubborn
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

74:17
Ayah 74:17
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ
sa-ur'hiquhu
Soon I will cover Him
صَعُودًا
ṣaʿūdan
(with) a laborious punishment
I will cover him with arduous torment.

74:18
Ayah 74:18
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, he
فَكَّرَ
fakkara
thought
وَقَدَّرَ
waqaddara
and plotted
Indeed, he thought and deliberated.1

74:19
Ayah 74:19
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
فَقُتِلَ
faqutila
So may he be destroyed
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
قَدَّرَ
qaddara
he plotted
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

74:20
Ayah 74:20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
قُتِلَ
qutila
may he be destroyed
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
قَدَّرَ
qaddara
he plotted
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

74:21
Ayah 74:21
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
نَظَرَ
naẓara
he looked
Then he considered [again];

74:22
Ayah 74:22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
عَبَسَ
ʿabasa
he frowned
وَبَسَرَ
wabasara
and scowled
Then he frowned and scowled;

74:23
Ayah 74:23
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
أَدْبَرَ
adbara
he turned back
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
wa-is'takbara
and was proud
Then he turned back and was arrogant

74:24
Ayah 74:24
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
فَقَالَ
faqāla
Then he said
إِنْ
in
Not
هَـٰذَآ
hādhā
(is) this
إِلَّا
illā
but
سِحْرٌ
siḥ'run
magic
يُؤْثَرُ
yu'tharu
imitated
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

74:25
Ayah 74:25
إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
إِنْ
in
Not
هَـٰذَآ
hādhā
(is) this
إِلَّا
illā
but
قَوْلُ
qawlu
(the) word
ٱلْبَشَرِ
l-bashari
(of) a human being
This is not but the word of a human being."

74:26
Ayah 74:26
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
سَأُصْلِيهِ
sa-uṣ'līhi
Soon I will drive him
سَقَرَ
saqara
(into) Hell
I will drive him into Saqar.1

74:27
Ayah 74:27
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
وَمَآ
wamā
And what
أَدْرَىٰكَ
adrāka
can make you know
مَا
what
سَقَرُ
saqaru
(is) Hell
And what can make you know what is Saqar?

74:28
Ayah 74:28
لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
لَا
Not
تُبْقِى
tub'qī
it lets remain
وَلَا
walā
and not
تَذَرُ
tadharu
it leaves
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

74:29
Ayah 74:29
لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ
لَوَّاحَةٌ
lawwāḥatun
Scorching
لِّلْبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
the human (skin)
Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.

74:30
Ayah 74:30
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhā
Over it
تِسْعَةَ
tis'ʿata
(are) nine
عَشَرَ
ʿashara
teen
Over it are nineteen [angels].

74:31
Ayah 74:31
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
جَعَلْنَآ
jaʿalnā
We have made
أَصْحَـٰبَ
aṣḥāba
keepers
ٱلنَّارِ
l-nāri
(of) the Fire
إِلَّا
illā
except
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً
malāikatan
Angels
وَمَا
wamā
And not
جَعَلْنَا
jaʿalnā
We have made
عِدَّتَهُمْ
ʿiddatahum
their number
إِلَّا
illā
except
فِتْنَةً
fit'natan
(as) a trial
لِّلَّذِينَ
lilladhīna
for those who
كَفَرُوا۟
kafarū
disbelieve
لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ
liyastayqina
that may be certain
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
أُوتُوا۟
ūtū
were given
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ
l-kitāba
the Scripture
وَيَزْدَادَ
wayazdāda
and may increase
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
ءَامَنُوٓا۟
āmanū
believe
إِيمَـٰنًا
īmānan
(in) faith
وَلَا
walā
and not
يَرْتَابَ
yartāba
may doubt
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
أُوتُوا۟
ūtū
were given
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ
l-kitāba
the Scripture
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
wal-mu'minūna
and the believers
وَلِيَقُولَ
waliyaqūla
and that may say
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those
فِى
in
قُلُوبِهِم
qulūbihim
their hearts
مَّرَضٌ
maraḍun
(is) a disease
وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
wal-kāfirūna
and the disbelievers
مَاذَآ
mādhā
What
أَرَادَ
arāda
(does) intend
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahu
Allah
بِهَـٰذَا
bihādhā
by this
مَثَلًا
mathalan
example
كَذَٰلِكَ
kadhālika
Thus
يُضِلُّ
yuḍillu
does let go astray
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahu
Allah
مَن
man
whom
يَشَآءُ
yashāu
He wills
وَيَهْدِى
wayahdī
and guides
مَن
man
whom
يَشَآءُ
yashāu
He wills
وَمَا
wamā
And none
يَعْلَمُ
yaʿlamu
knows
جُنُودَ
junūda
(the) hosts
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
إِلَّا
illā
except
هُوَ
huwa
Him
وَمَا
wamā
And not
هِىَ
hiya
it
إِلَّا
illā
(is) but
ذِكْرَىٰ
dhik'rā
a reminder
لِلْبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
to (the) human beings
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

74:32
Ayah 74:32
كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
وَٱلْقَمَرِ
wal-qamari
By the moon
No! By the moon.

74:33
Ayah 74:33
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
وَٱلَّيْلِ
wa-al-layli
And the night
إِذْ
idh
when
أَدْبَرَ
adbara
it departs
And [by] the night when it departs.

74:34
Ayah 74:34
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ
وَٱلصُّبْحِ
wal-ṣub'ḥi
And the morning
إِذَآ
idhā
when
أَسْفَرَ
asfara
it brightens
And [by] the morning when it brightens,

74:35
Ayah 74:35
إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ
إِنَّهَا
innahā
Indeed, it
لَإِحْدَى
la-iḥ'dā
(is) surely one
ٱلْكُبَرِ
l-kubari
(of) the greatest
Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].

74:36
Ayah 74:36
نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
نَذِيرًا
nadhīran
A warning
لِّلْبَشَرِ
lil'bashari
to (the) human being
As a warning to humanity -

74:37
Ayah 74:37
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
لِمَن
liman
To whoever
شَآءَ
shāa
wills
مِنكُمْ
minkum
among you
أَن
an
to
يَتَقَدَّمَ
yataqaddama
proceed
أَوْ
aw
or
يَتَأَخَّرَ
yata-akhara
stay behind
To whoever wills among you to proceed1 or stay behind.

74:38
Ayah 74:38
كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
كُلُّ
kullu
Every
نَفْسٍۭ
nafsin
soul
بِمَا
bimā
for what
كَسَبَتْ
kasabat
it has earned
رَهِينَةٌ
rahīnatun
(is) pledged
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained1.

74:39
Ayah 74:39
إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
إِلَّآ
illā
Except
أَصْحَـٰبَ
aṣḥāba
(the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِ
l-yamīni
(of) the right
Except the companions of the right,1.

74:40
Ayah 74:40
فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
فِى
In
جَنَّـٰتٍ
jannātin
Gardens
يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
yatasāalūna
asking each other
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

74:41
Ayah 74:41
عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
عَنِ
ʿani
About
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
l-muj'rimīna
the criminals
About the criminals,

74:42
Ayah 74:42
مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
مَا
What
سَلَكَكُمْ
salakakum
led you
فِى
into
سَقَرَ
saqara
Hell
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

74:43
Ayah 74:43
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
قَالُوا۟
qālū
They will say
لَمْ
lam
Not
نَكُ
naku
we were
مِنَ
mina
of
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
l-muṣalīna
those who prayed
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

74:44
Ayah 74:44
وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
وَلَمْ
walam
And not
نَكُ
naku
we used to
نُطْعِمُ
nuṭ'ʿimu
feed
ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
l-mis'kīna
the poor
Nor did we used to feed the poor.

74:45
Ayah 74:45
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
وَكُنَّا
wakunnā
And we used to
نَخُوضُ
nakhūḍu
indulge in vain talk
مَعَ
maʿa
with
ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
l-khāiḍīna
the vain talkers
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

74:46
Ayah 74:46
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
وَكُنَّا
wakunnā
And we used to
نُكَذِّبُ
nukadhibu
deny
بِيَوْمِ
biyawmi
(the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ
l-dīni
(of) the Judgment
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

74:47
Ayah 74:47
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
حَتَّىٰٓ
ḥattā
Until
أَتَىٰنَا
atānā
came to us
ٱلْيَقِينُ
l-yaqīnu
the certainty
Until there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."

74:48
Ayah 74:48
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
فَمَا
famā
Then not
تَنفَعُهُمْ
tanfaʿuhum
will benefit them
شَفَـٰعَةُ
shafāʿatu
intercession
ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
l-shāfiʿīna
(of) the intercessors
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

74:49
Ayah 74:49
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
فَمَا
famā
Then what
لَهُمْ
lahum
(is) for them
عَنِ
ʿani
(that) from
ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ
l-tadhkirati
the Reminder
مُعْرِضِينَ
muʿ'riḍīna
they (are) turning away
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.

74:50
Ayah 74:50
كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
كَأَنَّهُمْ
ka-annahum
As if they (were)
حُمُرٌ
ḥumurun
donkeys
مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
mus'tanfiratun
frightened
As if they were alarmed donkeys.

74:51
Ayah 74:51
فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
فَرَّتْ
farrat
Fleeing
مِن
min
from
قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
qaswaratin
a lion
Fleeing from a lion?

74:52
Ayah 74:52
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
بَلْ
bal
Nay
يُرِيدُ
yurīdu
Desires
كُلُّ
kullu
every
ٱمْرِئٍ
im'ri-in
person
مِّنْهُمْ
min'hum
of them
أَن
an
that
يُؤْتَىٰ
yu'tā
he may be given
صُحُفًا
ṣuḥufan
pages
مُّنَشَّرَةً
munasharatan
spread out
Rather, every person among them desires that he1 would be given scriptures spread about.2

74:53
Ayah 74:53
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
بَل
bal
But
لَّا
not
يَخَافُونَ
yakhāfūna
they fear
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ
l-ākhirata
the Hereafter
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

74:54
Ayah 74:54
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ
كَلَّآ
kallā
Nay
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, it
تَذْكِرَةٌ
tadhkiratun
(is) a Reminder
No! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder.

74:55
Ayah 74:55
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
فَمَن
faman
So whoever
شَآءَ
shāa
wills
ذَكَرَهُۥ
dhakarahu
(may) pay heed to it
Then whoever wills will remember it.

Ayah 74:56
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
يَذْكُرُونَ
yadhkurūna
will pay heed
إِلَّآ
illā
except
أَن
an
that
يَشَآءَ
yashāa
wills
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahu
Allah
هُوَ
huwa
He
أَهْلُ
ahlu
(is) worthy
ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ
l-taqwā
to be feared
وَأَهْلُ
wa-ahlu
and worthy
ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
l-maghfirati
to forgive
And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
