Ayah 78:1
عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
عَمَّ

Ayah 78:2
عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
عَنِ

the News
ٱلْعَظِيمِ
l-ʿaẓīmi
the Great
About the great news1 -

78:3
Ayah 78:3
ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
(About) which
هُمْ
hum
they
فِيهِ
fīhi
(are) concerning it
مُخْتَلِفُونَ
mukh'talifūna
(in) disagreement
That over which they are in disagreement.

78:4
Ayah 78:4
كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
سَيَعْلَمُونَ
sayaʿlamūna
(soon) they will know
No! They are going to know.

78:5
Ayah 78:5
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
سَيَعْلَمُونَ
sayaʿlamūna
(soon) they will know
Then, no! They are going to know.

78:6
Ayah 78:6
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا
أَلَمْ
alam
Have not
نَجْعَلِ
najʿali
We made
ٱلْأَرْضَ
l-arḍa
the earth
مِهَـٰدًا
mihādan
a resting place
Have We not made the earth a resting place?

78:7
Ayah 78:7
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
وَٱلْجِبَالَ
wal-jibāla
And the mountains
أَوْتَادًا
awtādan
(as) pegs
And the mountains as stakes?1

78:8
Ayah 78:8
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ
wakhalaqnākum
And We created you
أَزْوَٰجًا
azwājan
(in) pairs
And We created you in pairs.

78:9
Ayah 78:9
وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا
وَجَعَلْنَا
wajaʿalnā
And We made
نَوْمَكُمْ
nawmakum
your sleep
سُبَاتًا
subātan
(for) rest
And made your sleep [a means for] rest

78:10
Ayah 78:10
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا
وَجَعَلْنَا
wajaʿalnā
And We made
ٱلَّيْلَ
al-layla
the night
لِبَاسًا
libāsan
(as) covering
And made the night as clothing1.

78:11
Ayah 78:11
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
وَجَعَلْنَا
wajaʿalnā
And We made
ٱلنَّهَارَ
l-nahāra
the day
مَعَاشًا
maʿāshan
(for) livelihood
And made the day for livelihood.

78:12
Ayah 78:12
وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا
وَبَنَيْنَا
wabanaynā
And We constructed
فَوْقَكُمْ
fawqakum
over you
سَبْعًا
sabʿan
seven
شِدَادًا
shidādan
strong
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens].

78:13
Ayah 78:13
وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا
وَجَعَلْنَا
wajaʿalnā
And We placed
سِرَاجًا
sirājan
a lamp
وَهَّاجًا
wahhājan
burning
And made [therein] a burning lamp

78:14
Ayah 78:14
وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا
وَأَنزَلْنَا
wa-anzalnā
And We sent down
مِنَ
mina
from
ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ
l-muʿ'ṣirāti
the rain clouds
مَآءً
māan
water
ثَجَّاجًا
thajjājan
pouring abundantly
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.

78:15
Ayah 78:15
لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا
لِّنُخْرِجَ
linukh'rija
That We may bring forth
بِهِۦ
bihi
thereby
حَبًّا
ḥabban
grain
وَنَبَاتًا
wanabātan
and vegetation
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.

78:16
Ayah 78:16
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ
wajannātin
And gardens
أَلْفَافًا
alfāfan
(of) thick foliage
And gardens of entwined growth.

78:17
Ayah 78:17
إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًا
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
يَوْمَ
yawma
(the) Day
ٱلْفَصْلِ
l-faṣli
(of) the Judgment
كَانَ
kāna
is
مِيقَـٰتًا
mīqātan
an appointed time
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

78:18
Ayah 78:18
يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
يُنفَخُ
yunfakhu
(in which) shall be blown
فِى
fī
in
ٱلصُّورِ
l-ṣūri
the trumpet
فَتَأْتُونَ
fatatūna
and you will come forth
أَفْوَاجًا
afwājan
(in) crowds
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

78:19
Ayah 78:19
وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًا
وَفُتِحَتِ
wafutiḥati
And is opened
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
l-samāu
the heaven
فَكَانَتْ
fakānat
and becomes
أَبْوَٰبًا
abwāban
gateways
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.

78:20
Ayah 78:20
وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا
وَسُيِّرَتِ
wasuyyirati
And are moved
ٱلْجِبَالُ
l-jibālu
the mountains
فَكَانَتْ
fakānat
and become
سَرَابًا
sarāban
a mirage
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

78:21
Ayah 78:21
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
Hell
كَانَتْ
kānat
is
مِرْصَادًا
mir'ṣādan
lying in wait
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

78:22
Ayah 78:22
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ
lilṭṭāghīna
For the transgressors
مَـَٔابًا
maāban
a place of return
For the transgressors, a place of return,

78:23
Ayah 78:23
لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا
لَّـٰبِثِينَ
lābithīna
(They will) be remaining
فِيهَآ
fīhā
therein
أَحْقَابًا
aḥqāban
(for) ages
In which they will remain for ages [unending].

78:24
Ayah 78:24
لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا
لَّا
lā
Not
يَذُوقُونَ
yadhūqūna
they will taste
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
بَرْدًا
bardan
coolness
وَلَا
walā
and not
شَرَابًا
sharāban
any drink
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

78:25
Ayah 78:25
إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا
إِلَّا
illā
Except
حَمِيمًا
ḥamīman
scalding water
وَغَسَّاقًا
waghassāqan
and purulence
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

78:26
Ayah 78:26
جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا
جَزَآءً
jazāan
A recompense
وِفَاقًا
wifāqan
appropriate
An appropriate recompense.1

78:27
Ayah 78:27
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا
إِنَّهُمْ
innahum
Indeed, they
كَانُوا۟
kānū
were
لَا
lā
not
يَرْجُونَ
yarjūna
expecting
حِسَابًا
ḥisāban
an account
Indeed, they were not expecting an account

78:28
Ayah 78:28
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا
وَكَذَّبُوا۟
wakadhabū
And they denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا
biāyātinā
Our Signs
كِذَّابًا
kidhāban
(with) denial
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

78:29
Ayah 78:29
وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا
وَكُلَّ
wakulla
And every
شَىْءٍ
shayin
thing
أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ
aḥṣaynāhu
We have enumerated it
كِتَـٰبًا
kitāban
(in) a Book
But all things We have enumerated in writing.

78:30
Ayah 78:30
فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
فَذُوقُوا۟
fadhūqū
So taste
فَلَن
falan
and never
نَّزِيدَكُمْ
nazīdakum
We will increase you
إِلَّا
illā
except
عَذَابًا
ʿadhāban
(in) punishment
"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."1

78:31
Ayah 78:31
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
lil'muttaqīna
for the righteous
مَفَازًا
mafāzan
(is) success
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment1 -

78:32
Ayah 78:32
حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا
حَدَآئِقَ
ḥadāiqa
Gardens
وَأَعْنَـٰبًا
wa-aʿnāban
and grapevines
Gardens and grapevines.

78:33
Ayah 78:33
وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا
وَكَوَاعِبَ
wakawāʿiba
And splendid companions
أَتْرَابًا
atrāban
well-matched
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age.

78:34
Ayah 78:34
وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا
وَكَأْسًا
wakasan
And a cup
دِهَاقًا
dihāqan
full
And a full cup.1

78:35
Ayah 78:35
لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا
لَّا
lā
Not
يَسْمَعُونَ
yasmaʿūna
they will hear
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
لَغْوًا
laghwan
any vain talk
وَلَا
walā
and not
كِذَّٰبًا
kidhāban
any falsehood
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

78:36
Ayah 78:36
جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا
جَزَآءً
jazāan
(As) a reward
مِّن
min
from
رَّبِّكَ
rabbika
your Lord
عَطَآءً
ʿaṭāan
a gift
حِسَابًا
ḥisāban
(according to) account
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,1

78:37
Ayah 78:37
رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا
رَّبِّ
rabbi
Lord
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ
l-samāwāti
(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍi
and the earth
وَمَا
wamā
and whatever
بَيْنَهُمَا
baynahumā
(is) between both of them
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ
l-raḥmāni
the Most Gracious
لَا
lā
not
يَمْلِكُونَ
yamlikūna
they have power
مِنْهُ
min'hu
from Him
خِطَابًا
khiṭāban
(to) address
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.1

78:38
Ayah 78:38
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
يَقُومُ
yaqūmu
will stand
ٱلرُّوحُ
l-rūḥu
the Spirit
وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ
wal-malāikatu
and the Angels
صَفًّا
ṣaffan
(in) rows
لَّا
lā
not
يَتَكَلَّمُونَ
yatakallamūna
they will speak
إِلَّا
illā
except
مَنْ
man
(one) who
أَذِنَ
adhina
permits
لَهُ
lahu
[for] him
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ
l-raḥmānu
the Most Gracious
وَقَالَ
waqāla
and he (will) say
صَوَابًا
ṣawāban
(what is) correct
The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

78:39
Ayah 78:39
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
That
ٱلْيَوْمُ
l-yawmu
(is) the Day
ٱلْحَقُّ
l-ḥaqu
the True
فَمَن
faman
So whoever
شَآءَ
shāa
wills
ٱتَّخَذَ
ittakhadha
let him take
إِلَىٰ
ilā
towards
رَبِّهِۦ
rabbihi
his Lord
مَـَٔابًا
maāban
a return
That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.1

78:40
Ayah 78:40
إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا
إِنَّآ
innā
Indeed We
أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ
andharnākum
[We] have warned you
عَذَابًا
ʿadhāban
(of) a punishment
قَرِيبًا
qarīban
near
يَوْمَ
yawma
(the) Day
يَنظُرُ
yanẓuru
will see
ٱلْمَرْءُ
l-maru
the man
مَا
mā
what
قَدَّمَتْ
qaddamat
have sent forth
يَدَاهُ
yadāhu
his hands
وَيَقُولُ
wayaqūlu
and will say
ٱلْكَافِرُ
l-kāfiru
the disbeliever
يَـٰلَيْتَنِى
yālaytanī
O I wish
كُنتُ
kuntu
I were
تُرَٰبًۢا
turāban
dust
Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth1 and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
