80:1
Ayah 80:1
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
عَبَسَ
ʿabasa
He frowned
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
watawallā
and turned away
He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away

80:2
Ayah 80:2
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
أَن
an
Because
جَآءَهُ
jāahu
came to him
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
l-aʿmā
the blind man
Because there came to him the blind man,1 [interrupting].

80:3
Ayah 80:3
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
وَمَا
wamā
But what
يُدْرِيكَ
yud'rīka
would make you know
لَعَلَّهُۥ
laʿallahu
that he might
يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
yazzakkā
purify himself
But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified1

80:4
Ayah 80:4
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ
أَوْ
aw
Or
يَذَّكَّرُ
yadhakkaru
be reminded
فَتَنفَعَهُ
fatanfaʿahu
so would benefit him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ
l-dhik'rā
the reminder
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

80:5
Ayah 80:5
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ
أَمَّا
ammā
As for
مَنِ
mani
(him) who
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ
is'taghnā
considers himself free from need
As for he who thinks himself without need,1

80:6
Ayah 80:6
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
فَأَنتَ
fa-anta
So you
لَهُۥ
lahu
to him
تَصَدَّىٰ
taṣaddā
give attention
To him you give attention.

80:7
Ayah 80:7
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
عَلَيْكَ
ʿalayka
upon you
أَلَّا
allā
that not
يَزَّكَّىٰ
yazzakkā
he purifies himself
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.1

80:8
Ayah 80:8
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
وَأَمَّا
wa-ammā
But as for
مَن
man
(he) who
جَآءَكَ
jāaka
came to you
يَسْعَىٰ
yasʿā
striving
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

80:9
Ayah 80:9
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
While he
يَخْشَىٰ
yakhshā
fears
While he fears [Allāh],

80:10
Ayah 80:10
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
فَأَنتَ
fa-anta
But you
عَنْهُ
ʿanhu
from him
تَلَهَّىٰ
talahhā
(are) distracted
From him you are distracted.

80:11
Ayah 80:11
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
كَلَّآ
kallā
Nay
إِنَّهَا
innahā
Indeed, it
تَذْكِرَةٌ
tadhkiratun
(is) a reminder
No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;

80:12
Ayah 80:12
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
فَمَن
faman
So whosoever
شَآءَ
shāa
wills
ذَكَرَهُۥ
dhakarahu
may remember it
So whoever wills may remember it.1

80:13
Ayah 80:13
فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
فِى
In
صُحُفٍ
ṣuḥufin
sheets
مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
mukarramatin
honored
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

80:14
Ayah 80:14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ
marfūʿatin
Exalted
مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ
muṭahharatin
purified
Exalted and purified,

80:15
Ayah 80:15
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ
بِأَيْدِى
bi-aydī
In (the) hands
سَفَرَةٍ
safaratin
(of) scribes
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

80:16
Ayah 80:16
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ
كِرَامٍۭ
kirāmin
Noble
بَرَرَةٍ
bararatin
dutiful
Noble and dutiful.

80:17
Ayah 80:17
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ
قُتِلَ
qutila
Is destroyed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ
l-insānu
[the] man
مَآ
how
أَكْفَرَهُۥ
akfarahu
ungrateful is he
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man;1 how disbelieving is he.

80:18
Ayah 80:18
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
مِنْ
min
From
أَىِّ
ayyi
what
شَىْءٍ
shayin
thing
خَلَقَهُۥ
khalaqahu
He created him
From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?

80:19
Ayah 80:19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
مِن
min
From
نُّطْفَةٍ
nuṭ'fatin
a semen-drop
خَلَقَهُۥ
khalaqahu
He created him
فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
faqaddarahu
then He proportioned him
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;1

80:20
Ayah 80:20
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
ٱلسَّبِيلَ
l-sabīla
the way
يَسَّرَهُۥ
yassarahu
He made easy for him
Then He eased the way for him;1

80:21
Ayah 80:21
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
أَمَاتَهُۥ
amātahu
He causes him to die
فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ
fa-aqbarahu
and provides a grave for him
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.1

80:22
Ayah 80:22
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِذَا
idhā
when
شَآءَ
shāa
He wills
أَنشَرَهُۥ
ansharahu
He will resurrect him
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

80:23
Ayah 80:23
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
لَمَّا
lammā
Not
يَقْضِ
yaqḍi
he has accomplished
مَآ
what
أَمَرَهُۥ
amarahu
He commanded him
No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

80:24
Ayah 80:24
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
فَلْيَنظُرِ
falyanẓuri
Then let look
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ
l-insānu
the man
إِلَىٰ
ilā
at
طَعَامِهِۦٓ
ṭaʿāmihi
his food
Then let mankind look at his food -

80:25
Ayah 80:25
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا
أَنَّا
annā
That [We]
صَبَبْنَا
ṣababnā
[We] poured
ٱلْمَآءَ
l-māa
the water
صَبًّا
ṣabban
(in) abundance
How We poured down water in torrents,

80:26
Ayah 80:26
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
شَقَقْنَا
shaqaqnā
We cleaved
ٱلْأَرْضَ
l-arḍa
the earth
شَقًّا
shaqqan
splitting
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

80:27
Ayah 80:27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا
fa-anbatnā
Then We caused to grow
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
حَبًّا
ḥabban
grain
And caused to grow within it grain

80:28
Ayah 80:28
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا
وَعِنَبًا
waʿinaban
And grapes
وَقَضْبًا
waqaḍban
and green fodder
And grapes and herbage

80:29
Ayah 80:29
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا
وَزَيْتُونًا
wazaytūnan
And olive
وَنَخْلًا
wanakhlan
and date-palms
And olive and palm trees

80:30
Ayah 80:30
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا
وَحَدَآئِقَ
waḥadāiqa
And gardens
غُلْبًا
ghul'ban
(of) thick foliage
And gardens of dense shrubbery

80:31
Ayah 80:31
وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
وَفَـٰكِهَةً
wafākihatan
And fruits
وَأَبًّا
wa-abban
and grass
And fruit and grass -

80:32
Ayah 80:32
مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ
مَّتَـٰعًا
matāʿan
(As) a provision
لَّكُمْ
lakum
for you
وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ
wali-anʿāmikum
and for your cattle
[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

80:33
Ayah 80:33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
فَإِذَا
fa-idhā
But when
جَآءَتِ
jāati
comes
ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
l-ṣākhatu
the Deafening Blast
But when there comes the Deafening Blast1

80:34
Ayah 80:34
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
يَفِرُّ
yafirru
will flee
ٱلْمَرْءُ
l-maru
a man
مِنْ
min
from
أَخِيهِ
akhīhi
his brother
On the Day a man will flee from his brother

80:35
Ayah 80:35
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
وَأُمِّهِۦ
wa-ummihi
And his mother
وَأَبِيهِ
wa-abīhi
and his father
And his mother and his father

80:36
Ayah 80:36
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ
waṣāḥibatihi
And his wife
وَبَنِيهِ
wabanīhi
and his children
And his wife and his children,

80:37
Ayah 80:37
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
لِكُلِّ
likulli
For every
ٱمْرِئٍ
im'ri-in
man
مِّنْهُمْ
min'hum
among them
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
شَأْنٌ
shanun
(will be) a matter
يُغْنِيهِ
yugh'nīhi
occupying him
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.1

80:38
Ayah 80:38
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ
وُجُوهٌ
wujūhun
Faces
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
مُّسْفِرَةٌ
mus'firatun
(will be) bright
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

80:39
Ayah 80:39
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
ضَاحِكَةٌ
ḍāḥikatun
Laughing
مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
mus'tabshiratun
rejoicing at good news
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

80:40
Ayah 80:40
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ
وَوُجُوهٌ
wawujūhun
And faces
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhā
upon them
غَبَرَةٌ
ghabaratun
(will be) dust
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

80:41
Ayah 80:41
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
تَرْهَقُهَا
tarhaquhā
Will cover them
قَتَرَةٌ
qataratun
darkness
Blackness will cover them.

80:42
Ayah 80:42
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ
ulāika
Those
هُمُ
humu
[they]
ٱلْكَفَرَةُ
l-kafaratu
(are) the disbelievers
ٱلْفَجَرَةُ
l-fajaratu
the wicked ones
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
