81:1

Ayah 81:1

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ

إِذَا

idhā

When

ٱلشَّمْسُ

l-shamsu

the sun

كُوِّرَتْ

kuwwirat

is wrapped up

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

81:2

Ayah 81:2

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلنُّجُومُ

l-nujūmu

the stars

ٱنكَدَرَتْ

inkadarat

fall, losing their luster

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

81:3

Ayah 81:3

وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْجِبَالُ

l-jibālu

the mountains

سُيِّرَتْ

suyyirat

are moved away

And when the mountains are removed

81:4

Ayah 81:4

وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْعِشَارُ

l-ʿishāru

the full-term she-camels

عُطِّلَتْ

ʿuṭṭilat

(are) left untended

And when full-term she-camels1 are neglected

81:5

Ayah 81:5

وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْوُحُوشُ

l-wuḥūshu

the wild beasts

حُشِرَتْ

ḥushirat

are gathered

And when the wild beasts are gathered

81:6

Ayah 81:6

وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْبِحَارُ

l-biḥāru

the seas

سُجِّرَتْ

sujjirat

are made to overflow

And when the seas are filled with flame1

81:7

Ayah 81:7

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلنُّفُوسُ

l-nufūsu

the souls

زُوِّجَتْ

zuwwijat

are paired

And when the souls are paired1

81:8

Ayah 81:8

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ

l-mawūdatu

the female infant buried alive

سُئِلَتْ

su-ilat

is asked

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

81:9

Ayah 81:9

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ

بِأَىِّ

bi-ayyi

For what

ذَنۢبٍ

dhanbin

sin

قُتِلَتْ

qutilat

she was killed

For what sin she was killed

81:10

Ayah 81:10

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلصُّحُفُ

l-ṣuḥufu

the pages

نُشِرَتْ

nushirat

are laid open

And when the pages1 are spread [i.e., made public]

81:11

Ayah 81:11

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

l-samāu

the sky

كُشِطَتْ

kushiṭat

is stripped away

And when the sky is stripped away

81:12

Ayah 81:12

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْجَحِيمُ

l-jaḥīmu

the Hellfire

سُعِّرَتْ

suʿʿirat

is set ablaze

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

81:13

Ayah 81:13

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ

وَإِذَا

wa-idhā

And when

ٱلْجَنَّةُ

l-janatu

Paradise

أُزْلِفَتْ

uz'lifat

is brought near

And when Paradise is brought near,

81:14

Ayah 81:14

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ

عَلِمَتْ

ʿalimat

Will know

نَفْسٌ

nafsun

a soul

مَّآ

mā

what

أَحْضَرَتْ

aḥḍarat

it has brought

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].1

81:15

Ayah 81:15

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ

فَلَآ

falā

But nay

أُقْسِمُ

uq'simu

I swear

بِٱلْخُنَّسِ

bil-khunasi

by the retreating planets

So I swear by the retreating stars -

81:16

Ayah 81:16

ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ

ٱلْجَوَارِ

al-jawāri

Those that run

ٱلْكُنَّسِ

l-kunasi

(and) disappear

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

81:17

Ayah 81:17

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ

وَٱلَّيْلِ

wa-al-layli

And the night

إِذَا

idhā

when

عَسْعَسَ

ʿasʿasa

it departs

And by the night as it closes in1

81:18

Ayah 81:18

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

وَٱلصُّبْحِ

wal-ṣub'ḥi

And the dawn

إِذَا

idhā

when

تَنَفَّسَ

tanaffasa

it breathes

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

81:19

Ayah 81:19

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ

إِنَّهُۥ

innahu

Indeed, it

لَقَوْلُ

laqawlu

(is) surely a word

رَسُولٍ

rasūlin

(of) a Messenger

كَرِيمٍ

karīmin

noble

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

81:20

Ayah 81:20

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ

ذِى

dhī

Possessor of

قُوَّةٍ

quwwatin

power

عِندَ

ʿinda

with

ذِى

dhī

(the) Owner of

ٱلْعَرْشِ

l-ʿarshi

the Throne

مَكِينٍ

makīnin

secure

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

81:21

Ayah 81:21

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ

مُّطَاعٍ

muṭāʿin

One to be obeyed

ثَمَّ

thamma

and

أَمِينٍ

amīnin

trustworthy

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

81:22

Ayah 81:22

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ

وَمَا

wamā

And not

صَاحِبُكُم

ṣāḥibukum

(is) your companion

بِمَجْنُونٍ

bimajnūnin

mad

And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.1

81:23

Ayah 81:23

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ

وَلَقَدْ

walaqad

And certainly

رَءَاهُ

raāhu

he saw him

بِٱلْأُفُقِ

bil-ufuqi

in the horizon

ٱلْمُبِينِ

l-mubīni

the clear

And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.1

81:24

Ayah 81:24

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ

وَمَا

wamā

And not

هُوَ

huwa

he (is)

عَلَى

ʿalā

on

ٱلْغَيْبِ

l-ghaybi

the unseen

بِضَنِينٍ

biḍanīnin

a withholder

And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.1

81:25

Ayah 81:25

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ

وَمَا

wamā

And not

هُوَ

huwa

it

بِقَوْلِ

biqawli

(is the) word

شَيْطَـٰنٍ

shayṭānin

(of) Shaitaan

رَّجِيمٍ

rajīmin

accursed

And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

81:26

Ayah 81:26

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ

فَأَيْنَ

fa-ayna

So where

تَذْهَبُونَ

tadhhabūna

are you going

So where are you going?1

81:27

Ayah 81:27

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

إِنْ

in

Not

هُوَ

huwa

it

إِلَّا

illā

(is) except

ذِكْرٌ

dhik'run

a reminder

لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

lil'ʿālamīna

to the worlds

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

81:28

Ayah 81:28

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ

لِمَن

liman

For whoever

شَآءَ

shāa

wills

مِنكُمْ

minkum

among you

أَن

an

to

يَسْتَقِيمَ

yastaqīma

take a straight way

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

81:29

Ayah 81:29

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

وَمَا

wamā

And not

تَشَآءُونَ

tashāūna

you will

إِلَّآ

illā

except

أَن

an

that

يَشَآءَ

yashāa

wills

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

رَبُّ

rabbu

Lord

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

l-ʿālamīna

(of) the worlds

And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.
