85:1
Ayah 85:1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
wal-samāi
By the sky
ذَاتِ
dhāti
containing
ٱلْبُرُوجِ
l-burūji
the constellations
By the sky containing great stars

85:2
Ayah 85:2
وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ
وَٱلْيَوْمِ
wal-yawmi
And the Day
ٱلْمَوْعُودِ
l-mawʿūdi
Promised
And [by] the promised Day

85:3
Ayah 85:3
وَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ
وَشَاهِدٍ
washāhidin
And (the) witness
وَمَشْهُودٍ
wamashhūdin
and what is witnessed
And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

85:4
Ayah 85:4
قُتِلَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ
قُتِلَ
qutila
Destroyed were
أَصْحَـٰبُ
aṣḥābu
(the) companions
ٱلْأُخْدُودِ
l-ukh'dūdi
(of) the pit
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] were the companions of the trench1

85:5
Ayah 85:5
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ
ٱلنَّارِ
al-nāri
(Of) the fire
ذَاتِ
dhāti
full
ٱلْوَقُودِ
l-waqūdi
(of) the fuel
[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

85:6
Ayah 85:6
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌ
إِذْ
idh
When
هُمْ
hum
they
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhā
by it
قُعُودٌ
quʿūdun
(were) sitting
When they were sitting near it.

85:7
Ayah 85:7
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌ
وَهُمْ
wahum
And they
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
over
مَا
mā
what
يَفْعَلُونَ
yafʿalūna
they were doing
بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
bil-mu'minīna
to the believers
شُهُودٌ
shuhūdun
witnesses
And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses. 1

85:8
Ayah 85:8
وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
نَقَمُوا۟
naqamū
they resented
مِنْهُمْ
min'hum
[of] them
إِلَّآ
illā
except
أَن
an
that
يُؤْمِنُوا۟
yu'minū
they believed
بِٱللَّهِ
bil-lahi
in Allah
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
l-ʿazīzi
the All-Mighty
ٱلْحَمِيدِ
l-ḥamīdi
the Praiseworthy
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

85:9
Ayah 85:9
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
The One Who
لَهُۥ
lahu
for Him
مُلْكُ
mul'ku
(is) the dominion
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ
l-samāwāti
(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍi
and the earth
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
and Allah
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
on
كُلِّ
kulli
every
شَىْءٍ
shayin
thing
شَهِيدٌ
shahīdun
(is) a Witness
To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, over all things, is Witness.1

85:10
Ayah 85:10
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
فَتَنُوا۟
fatanū
persecuted
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
l-mu'minīna
the believing men
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ
wal-mu'mināti
and the believing women
ثُمَّ
thumma
then
لَمْ
lam
not
يَتُوبُوا۟
yatūbū
they repented
فَلَهُمْ
falahum
then for them
عَذَابُ
ʿadhābu
(is the) punishment
جَهَنَّمَ
jahannama
(of) Hell
وَلَهُمْ
walahum
and for them
عَذَابُ
ʿadhābu
(is the) punishment
ٱلْحَرِيقِ
l-ḥarīqi
(of) the Burning Fire
Indeed, those who have tortured1 the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

85:11
Ayah 85:11
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
those who
ءَامَنُوا۟
āmanū
believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟
waʿamilū
and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ
l-ṣāliḥāti
the righteous deeds
لَهُمْ
lahum
for them
جَنَّـٰتٌ
jannātun
(will be) Gardens
تَجْرِى
tajrī
flow
مِن
min
from
تَحْتِهَا
taḥtihā
underneath it
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ
l-anhāru
the rivers
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
That
ٱلْفَوْزُ
l-fawzu
(is) the success
ٱلْكَبِيرُ
l-kabīru
the great
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

85:12
Ayah 85:12
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
بَطْشَ
baṭsha
(the) Grip
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
لَشَدِيدٌ
lashadīdun
(is) surely strong
Indeed, the assault [i.e., vengeance] of your Lord is severe.

85:13
Ayah 85:13
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed He
هُوَ
huwa
He
يُبْدِئُ
yub'di-u
originates
وَيُعِيدُ
wayuʿīdu
and repeats
Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.

85:14
Ayah 85:14
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ
وَهُوَ
wahuwa
And He
ٱلْغَفُورُ
l-ghafūru
(is) the Oft-Forgiving
ٱلْوَدُودُ
l-wadūdu
the Most Loving
And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate,

85:15
Ayah 85:15
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ
ذُو
dhū
Owner (of)
ٱلْعَرْشِ
l-ʿarshi
the Throne
ٱلْمَجِيدُ
l-majīdu
the Glorious
Honorable Owner of the Throne,

85:16
Ayah 85:16
فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
فَعَّالٌ
faʿʿālun
Doer
لِّمَا
limā
of what
يُرِيدُ
yurīdu
He intends
Effecter of what He intends.

85:17
Ayah 85:17
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ
هَلْ
hal
Has
أَتَىٰكَ
atāka
come to you
حَدِيثُ
ḥadīthu
(the) story
ٱلْجُنُودِ
l-junūdi
(of) the hosts
Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -

85:18
Ayah 85:18
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
فِرْعَوْنَ
fir'ʿawna
Firaun
وَثَمُودَ
wathamūda
and Thamud
[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamūd?

85:19
Ayah 85:19
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍ
بَلِ
bali
Nay
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
Those who
كَفَرُوا۟
kafarū
disbelieve
فِى
fī
(are) in
تَكْذِيبٍ
takdhībin
denial
But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

85:20
Ayah 85:20
وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ
وَٱللَّهُ
wal-lahu
But Allah
مِن
min
from
وَرَآئِهِم
warāihim
behind them
مُّحِيطٌۢ
muḥīṭun
encompasses
While Allāh encompasses them from behind.1

85:21
Ayah 85:21
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ
بَلْ
bal
Nay
هُوَ
huwa
It
قُرْءَانٌ
qur'ānun
(is) a Quran
مَّجِيدٌ
majīdun
Glorious
But this is an honored Qur’ān

85:22
Ayah 85:22
فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ
فِى
fī
In
لَوْحٍ
lawḥin
a Tablet
مَّحْفُوظٍۭ
maḥfūẓin
Guarded
[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate.
