86:1
Ayah 86:1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
wal-samāi
By the sky
وَٱلطَّارِقِ
wal-ṭāriqi
and the night comer
By the sky and the night comer

86:2
Ayah 86:2
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ
وَمَآ
wamā
And what
أَدْرَىٰكَ
adrāka
can make you know
مَا
what
ٱلطَّارِقُ
l-ṭāriqu
the night comer (is)
And what can make you know what is the night comer?

86:3
Ayah 86:3
ٱلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ
ٱلنَّجْمُ
al-najmu
(It is) the star
ٱلثَّاقِبُ
l-thāqibu
the piercing
It is the piercing star1

86:4
Ayah 86:4
إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ
إِن
in
Not
كُلُّ
kullu
(is) every
نَفْسٍ
nafsin
soul
لَّمَّا
lammā
but
عَلَيْهَا
ʿalayhā
over it
حَافِظٌ
ḥāfiẓun
(is) a protector
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

86:5
Ayah 86:5
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ
فَلْيَنظُرِ
falyanẓuri
So let see
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ
l-insānu
man
مِمَّ
mimma
from what
خُلِقَ
khuliqa
he is created
So let man observe from what he was created.

86:6
Ayah 86:6
خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ
خُلِقَ
khuliqa
He is created
مِن
min
from
مَّآءٍ
māin
a water
دَافِقٍ
dāfiqin
ejected
He was created from a fluid, ejected,

86:7
Ayah 86:7
يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ
يَخْرُجُ
yakhruju
Coming forth
مِنۢ
min
from
بَيْنِ
bayni
between
ٱلصُّلْبِ
l-ṣul'bi
the backbone
وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ
wal-tarāibi
and the ribs
Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

86:8
Ayah 86:8
إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, He
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
to
رَجْعِهِۦ
rajʿihi
return him
لَقَادِرٌ
laqādirun
(is) Able
Indeed, He [i.e., Allāh], to return him [to life], is Able.

86:9
Ayah 86:9
يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ
يَوْمَ
yawma
(The) Day
تُبْلَى
tub'lā
will be tested
ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ
l-sarāiru
the secrets
The Day when secrets will be put on trial,1

86:10
Ayah 86:10
فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٍ وَلَا نَاصِرٍ
فَمَا
famā
Then not
لَهُۥ
lahu
(is) for him
مِن
min
any
قُوَّةٍ
quwwatin
power
وَلَا
walā
and not
نَاصِرٍ
nāṣirin
any helper
Then he [i.e., man] will have no power or any helper.

86:11
Ayah 86:11
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِ
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
wal-samāi
By the sky
ذَاتِ
dhāti
which
ٱلرَّجْعِ
l-rajʿi
returns
By the sky which sends back1

86:12
Ayah 86:12
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍi
And the earth
ذَاتِ
dhāti
which
ٱلصَّدْعِ
l-ṣadʿi
cracks open
And [by] the earth which splits,1

86:13
Ayah 86:13
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ
إِنَّهُۥ
innahu
Indeed, it
لَقَوْلٌ
laqawlun
(is) surely a Word
فَصْلٌ
faṣlun
decisive
Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a decisive statement,

86:14
Ayah 86:14
وَمَا هُوَ بِٱلْهَزْلِ
وَمَا
wamā
And not
هُوَ
huwa
it
بِٱلْهَزْلِ
bil-hazli
(is) for amusement
And it is not amusement.

86:15
Ayah 86:15
إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا
إِنَّهُمْ
innahum
Indeed, they
يَكِيدُونَ
yakīdūna
are plotting
كَيْدًا
kaydan
a plot
Indeed, they are planning a plan,

86:16
Ayah 86:16
وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا
وَأَكِيدُ
wa-akīdu
But I am planning
كَيْدًا
kaydan
a plan
But I am planning a plan.

86:17
Ayah 86:17
فَمَهِّلِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًۢا
فَمَهِّلِ
famahhili
So give respite
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
l-kāfirīna
(to) the disbelievers
أَمْهِلْهُمْ
amhil'hum
Give respite to them
رُوَيْدًۢا
ruwaydan
little
So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.1
