88:1
Ayah 88:1
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ
هَلْ
hal
Has
أَتَىٰكَ
atāka
(there) come to you
حَدِيثُ
ḥadīthu
(the) news
ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ
l-ghāshiyati
(of) the Overwhelming
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?

88:2
Ayah 88:2
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ
وُجُوهٌ
wujūhun
Faces
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
خَـٰشِعَةٌ
khāshiʿatun
(will be) humbled
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,

88:3
Ayah 88:3
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
عَامِلَةٌ
ʿāmilatun
Laboring
نَّاصِبَةٌ
nāṣibatun
exhausted
Working [hard] and exhausted.1

88:4
Ayah 88:4
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً
تَصْلَىٰ
taṣlā
They will burn
نَارًا
nāran
(in) a Fire
حَامِيَةً
ḥāmiyatan
intensely hot
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.

88:5
Ayah 88:5
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ
تُسْقَىٰ
tus'qā
They will be given to drink
مِنْ
min
from
عَيْنٍ
ʿaynin
a spring
ءَانِيَةٍ
āniyatin
boiling
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.

88:6
Ayah 88:6
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
لَّيْسَ
laysa
Not is
لَهُمْ
lahum
for them
طَعَامٌ
ṭaʿāmun
food
إِلَّا
illā
except
مِن
min
from
ضَرِيعٍ
ḍarīʿin
a bitter thorny plant
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

88:7
Ayah 88:7
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ
لَّا
lā
Not
يُسْمِنُ
yus'minu
it nourishes
وَلَا
walā
and not
يُغْنِى
yugh'nī
it avails
مِن
min
from
جُوعٍ
jūʿin
hunger
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

88:8
Ayah 88:8
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ
وُجُوهٌ
wujūhun
Faces
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
that Day
نَّاعِمَةٌ
nāʿimatun
(will be) joyful
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

88:9
Ayah 88:9
لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ
لِّسَعْيِهَا
lisaʿyihā
With their effort
رَاضِيَةٌ
rāḍiyatun
satisfied
With their effort [they are] satisfied

88:10
Ayah 88:10
فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
فِى
fī
In
جَنَّةٍ
jannatin
a garden
عَالِيَةٍ
ʿāliyatin
elevated
In an elevated garden,

88:11
Ayah 88:11
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً
لَّا
lā
Not
تَسْمَعُ
tasmaʿu
they will hear
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
لَـٰغِيَةً
lāghiyatan
vain talk
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.1

88:12
Ayah 88:12
فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ
فِيهَا
fīhā
Therein
عَيْنٌ
ʿaynun
(will be) a spring
جَارِيَةٌ
jāriyatun
flowing
Within it is a flowing spring.

88:13
Ayah 88:13
فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ
فِيهَا
fīhā
Therein
سُرُرٌ
sururun
(will be) thrones
مَّرْفُوعَةٌ
marfūʿatun
raised high
Within it are couches raised high

88:14
Ayah 88:14
وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ
وَأَكْوَابٌ
wa-akwābun
And cups
مَّوْضُوعَةٌ
mawḍūʿatun
put in place
And cups put in place

88:15
Ayah 88:15
وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ
وَنَمَارِقُ
wanamāriqu
And cushions
مَصْفُوفَةٌ
maṣfūfatun
lined up
And cushions lined up

88:16
Ayah 88:16
وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ
وَزَرَابِىُّ
wazarābiyyu
And carpets
مَبْثُوثَةٌ
mabthūthatun
spread out
And carpets spread around.

88:17
Ayah 88:17
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ
أَفَلَا
afalā
Then do not
يَنظُرُونَ
yanẓurūna
they look
إِلَى
ilā
towards
ٱلْإِبِلِ
l-ibili
the camels
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
خُلِقَتْ
khuliqat
they are created
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

88:18
Ayah 88:18
وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ
وَإِلَى
wa-ilā
And towards
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
l-samāi
the sky
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
رُفِعَتْ
rufiʿat
it is raised
And at the sky - how it is raised?

88:19
Ayah 88:19
وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ
وَإِلَى
wa-ilā
And towards
ٱلْجِبَالِ
l-jibāli
the mountains
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
نُصِبَتْ
nuṣibat
they are fixed
And at the mountains - how they are erected?

88:20
Ayah 88:20
وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
وَإِلَى
wa-ilā
And towards
ٱلْأَرْضِ
l-arḍi
the earth
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
سُطِحَتْ
suṭiḥat
it is spread out
And at the earth - how it is spread out?

88:21
Ayah 88:21
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
فَذَكِّرْ
fadhakkir
So remind
إِنَّمَآ
innamā
only
أَنتَ
anta
you
مُذَكِّرٌ
mudhakkirun
(are) a reminder
So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.

88:22
Ayah 88:22
لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
لَّسْتَ
lasta
You are not
عَلَيْهِم
ʿalayhim
over them
بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
bimuṣayṭirin
a controller
You are not over them a controller.

88:23
Ayah 88:23
إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ
إِلَّا
illā
But
مَن
man
whoever
تَوَلَّىٰ
tawallā
turns away
وَكَفَرَ
wakafara
and disbelieves
However, he who turns away and disbelieves

88:24
Ayah 88:24
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ
fayuʿadhibuhu
Then will punish him
ٱللَّهُ
l-lahu
Allah
ٱلْعَذَابَ
l-ʿadhāba
(with) the punishment
ٱلْأَكْبَرَ
l-akbara
greatest
Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.

88:25
Ayah 88:25
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
إِلَيْنَآ
ilaynā
to Us
إِيَابَهُمْ
iyābahum
(will be) their return
Indeed, to Us is their return.

88:26
Ayah 88:26
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم
ثُمَّ
thumma
Then
إِنَّ
inna
indeed
عَلَيْنَا
ʿalaynā
upon Us
حِسَابَهُم
ḥisābahum
(is) their account
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
