Ayah 89:1
وَٱلْفَجْرِ
وَٱلْفَجْرِ
wal-fajri
By the dawn
By the dawn

89:2
Ayah 89:2
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
وَلَيَالٍ
walayālin
And the nights
عَشْرٍ
ʿashrin
ten
And [by] ten nights1

89:3
Ayah 89:3
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ
وَٱلشَّفْعِ
wal-shafʿi
And the even
وَٱلْوَتْرِ
wal-watri
and the odd
And [by] the even [number] and the odd

89:4
Ayah 89:4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
وَٱلَّيْلِ
wa-al-layli
And the night
إِذَا
idhā
when
يَسْرِ
yasri
it passes
And [by] the night when it passes,

89:5
Ayah 89:5
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ
هَلْ
hal
Is
فِى
in
ذَٰلِكَ
dhālika
that
قَسَمٌ
qasamun
(not) an oath
لِّذِى
lidhī
for those
حِجْرٍ
ḥij'rin
who understand
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?1

89:6
Ayah 89:6
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
أَلَمْ
alam
Did not
تَرَ
tara
you see
كَيْفَ
kayfa
how
فَعَلَ
faʿala
dealt
رَبُّكَ
rabbuka
your Lord
بِعَادٍ
biʿādin
with Aad
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -

89:7
Ayah 89:7
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ
إِرَمَ
irama
Iram
ذَاتِ
dhāti
possessors (of)
ٱلْعِمَادِ
l-ʿimādi
lofty pillars
[With] Iram1 - who had lofty pillars,2

89:8
Ayah 89:8
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
ٱلَّتِى
allatī
Which
لَمْ
lam
not
يُخْلَقْ
yukh'laq
had been created
مِثْلُهَا
mith'luhā
like them
فِى
in
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
l-bilādi
the cities
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

89:9
Ayah 89:9
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ
وَثَمُودَ
wathamūda
And Thamud
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
who
جَابُوا۟
jābū
carved out
ٱلصَّخْرَ
l-ṣakhra
the rocks
بِٱلْوَادِ
bil-wādi
in the valley
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

89:10
Ayah 89:10
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ
وَفِرْعَوْنَ
wafir'ʿawna
And Firaun
ذِى
dhī
owner of
ٱلْأَوْتَادِ
l-awtādi
stakes
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?1

89:11
Ayah 89:11
ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
ٱلَّذِينَ
alladhīna
Who
طَغَوْا۟
ṭaghaw
transgressed
فِى
in
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
l-bilādi
the lands
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

89:12
Ayah 89:12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟
fa-aktharū
And (made) much
فِيهَا
fīhā
therein
ٱلْفَسَادَ
l-fasāda
corruption
And increased therein the corruption.

89:13
Ayah 89:13
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
فَصَبَّ
faṣabba
So poured
عَلَيْهِمْ
ʿalayhim
on them
رَبُّكَ
rabbuka
your Lord
سَوْطَ
sawṭa
scourge
عَذَابٍ
ʿadhābin
(of) punishment
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

89:14
Ayah 89:14
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
رَبَّكَ
rabbaka
your Lord
لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
labil-mir'ṣādi
(is) surely Ever Watchful
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

89:15
Ayah 89:15
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ
فَأَمَّا
fa-ammā
And as for
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ
l-insānu
man
إِذَا
idhā
when
مَا
does
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ
ib'talāhu
try him
رَبُّهُۥ
rabbuhu
his Lord
فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ
fa-akramahu
and is generous to him
وَنَعَّمَهُۥ
wanaʿʿamahu
and favors him
فَيَقُولُ
fayaqūlu
he says
رَبِّىٓ
rabbī
My Lord
أَكْرَمَنِ
akramani
has honored me
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1

89:16
Ayah 89:16
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ
وَأَمَّآ
wa-ammā
But
إِذَا
idhā
when
مَا
does
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ
ib'talāhu
He try him
فَقَدَرَ
faqadara
and restricts
عَلَيْهِ
ʿalayhi
for him
رِزْقَهُۥ
riz'qahu
his provision
فَيَقُولُ
fayaqūlu
then he says
رَبِّىٓ
rabbī
My Lord
أَهَـٰنَنِ
ahānani
(has) humiliated me
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

89:17
Ayah 89:17
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
بَل
bal
But
لَّا
not
تُكْرِمُونَ
tuk'rimūna
you honor
ٱلْيَتِيمَ
l-yatīma
the orphan
No!1 But you do not honor the orphan

89:18
Ayah 89:18
وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
وَلَا
walā
And not
تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ
taḥāḍḍūna
you feel the urge
عَلَىٰ
ʿalā
to
طَعَامِ
ṭaʿāmi
feed
ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
l-mis'kīni
the poor
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

89:19
Ayah 89:19
وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا
وَتَأْكُلُونَ
watakulūna
And you consume
ٱلتُّرَاثَ
l-turātha
the inheritance
أَكْلًا
aklan
devouring
لَّمًّا
lamman
altogether
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,1

89:20
Ayah 89:20
وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا
وَتُحِبُّونَ
watuḥibbūna
And you love
ٱلْمَالَ
l-māla
wealth
حُبًّا
ḥubban
(with) love
جَمًّا
jamman
immense
And you love wealth with immense love.

89:21
Ayah 89:21
كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا
كَلَّآ
kallā
Nay
إِذَا
idhā
When
دُكَّتِ
dukkati
is leveled
ٱلْأَرْضُ
l-arḍu
the earth
دَكًّا
dakkan
pounded
دَكًّا
dakkan
(and) crushed
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

89:22
Ayah 89:22
وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا
وَجَآءَ
wajāa
And comes
رَبُّكَ
rabbuka
your Lord
وَٱلْمَلَكُ
wal-malaku
and the Angels
صَفًّا
ṣaffan
rank
صَفًّا
ṣaffan
(upon) rank
And your Lord has come1 and the angels, rank upon rank,

89:23
Ayah 89:23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ
wajīa
And is brought
يَوْمَئِذٍۭ
yawma-idhin
that Day
بِجَهَنَّمَ
bijahannama
Hell
يَوْمَئِذٍ
yawma-idhin
That Day
يَتَذَكَّرُ
yatadhakkaru
will remember
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ
l-insānu
man
وَأَنَّىٰ
wa-annā
but how
لَهُ
lahu
(will be) for him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ
l-dhik'rā
the remembrance
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?

89:24
Ayah 89:24
يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى
يَقُولُ
yaqūlu
He will say
يَـٰلَيْتَنِى
yālaytanī
O I wish
قَدَّمْتُ
qaddamtu
I had sent forth
لِحَيَاتِى
liḥayātī
for my life
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1

89:25
Ayah 89:25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ
fayawma-idhin
So that Day
لَّا
not
يُعَذِّبُ
yuʿadhibu
will punish
عَذَابَهُۥٓ
ʿadhābahu
(as) His punishment
أَحَدٌ
aḥadun
anyone
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

89:26
Ayah 89:26
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
وَلَا
walā
And not
يُوثِقُ
yūthiqu
will bind
وَثَاقَهُۥٓ
wathāqahu
(as) His binding
أَحَدٌ
aḥadun
anyone
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

89:27
Ayah 89:27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا
yāayyatuhā
O
ٱلنَّفْسُ
l-nafsu
soul
ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
l-muṭ'ma-inatu
who is satisfied
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
— The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab
89:28
Ayah 89:28
ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً
ٱرْجِعِىٓ
ir'jiʿī
Return
إِلَىٰ
ilā
to
رَبِّكِ
rabbiki
your Lord
رَاضِيَةً
rāḍiyatan
well pleased
مَّرْضِيَّةً
marḍiyyatan
and pleasing
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

89:29
Ayah 89:29
فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى
فَٱدْخُلِى
fa-ud'khulī
So enter
فِى
among
عِبَـٰدِى
ʿibādī
My slaves
And enter among My [righteous] servants

89:30
Ayah 89:30
وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى
وَٱدْخُلِى
wa-ud'khulī
And enter
جَنَّتِى
jannatī
My Paradise
And enter My Paradise."
