91:1
Ayah 91:1
وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا
وَٱلشَّمْسِ
wal-shamsi
By the sun
وَضُحَىٰهَا
waḍuḥāhā
and its brightness
By the sun and its brightness
— The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab
91:2
Ayah 91:2
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا
وَٱلْقَمَرِ
wal-qamari
And the moon
إِذَا
idhā
when
تَلَىٰهَا
talāhā
it follows it
And [by] the moon when it follows it

91:3
Ayah 91:3
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا
وَٱلنَّهَارِ
wal-nahāri
And the day
إِذَا
idhā
when
جَلَّىٰهَا
jallāhā
it displays it
And [by] the day when it displays it1

91:4
Ayah 91:4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا
وَٱلَّيْلِ
wa-al-layli
And the night
إِذَا
idhā
when
يَغْشَىٰهَا
yaghshāhā
it covers it
And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it

91:5
Ayah 91:5
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ
wal-samāi
And the heaven
وَمَا
wamā
and (He) Who
بَنَىٰهَا
banāhā
constructed it
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

91:6
Ayah 91:6
وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
wal-arḍi
And the earth
وَمَا
wamā
and by (He) Who
طَحَىٰهَا
ṭaḥāhā
spread it
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
— The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab
91:7
Ayah 91:7
وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا
وَنَفْسٍ
wanafsin
And (the) soul
وَمَا
wamā
and (He) Who
سَوَّىٰهَا
sawwāhā
proportioned it
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it1

91:8
Ayah 91:8
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا
فَأَلْهَمَهَا
fa-alhamahā
And He inspired it
فُجُورَهَا
fujūrahā
(to distinguish) its wickedness
وَتَقْوَىٰهَا
wataqwāhā
and its righteousness
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

91:9
Ayah 91:9
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
قَدْ
qad
Indeed
أَفْلَحَ
aflaḥa
he succeeds
مَن
man
who
زَكَّىٰهَا
zakkāhā
purifies it
He has succeeded who purifies it,

91:10
Ayah 91:10
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا
وَقَدْ
waqad
And indeed
خَابَ
khāba
he fails
مَن
man
who
دَسَّىٰهَا
dassāhā
buries it
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

91:11
Ayah 91:11
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ
كَذَّبَتْ
kadhabat
Denied
ثَمُودُ
thamūdu
Thamud
بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ
biṭaghwāhā
by their transgression
Thamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,

91:12
Ayah 91:12
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا
إِذِ
idhi
When
ٱنۢبَعَثَ
inbaʿatha
(was) sent forth
أَشْقَىٰهَا
ashqāhā
(the) most wicked of them
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.1

91:13
Ayah 91:13
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا
فَقَالَ
faqāla
But said
لَهُمْ
lahum
to them
رَسُولُ
rasūlu
(the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
(of) Allah
نَاقَةَ
nāqata
(It is the) she-camel
ٱللَّهِ
l-lahi
(of) Allah
وَسُقْيَـٰهَا
wasuq'yāhā
and her drink
And the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink."

91:14
Ayah 91:14
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا
فَكَذَّبُوهُ
fakadhabūhu
But they denied him
فَعَقَرُوهَا
faʿaqarūhā
and they hamstrung her
فَدَمْدَمَ
fadamdama
So destroyed
عَلَيْهِمْ
ʿalayhim
them
رَبُّهُم
rabbuhum
their Lord
بِذَنۢبِهِمْ
bidhanbihim
for their sin
فَسَوَّىٰهَا
fasawwāhā
and leveled them
But they denied him and hamstrung1 her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].

91:15
Ayah 91:15
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا
وَلَا
walā
And not
يَخَافُ
yakhāfu
He fears
عُقْبَـٰهَا
ʿuq'bāhā
its consequences
And He does not fear the consequence thereof.1
