96:1
Ayah 96:1
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ
ٱقْرَأْ

Read
بِٱسْمِ
bi-is'mi
in (the) name
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
(of) your Lord
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
the One Who
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
created
Recite in the name of your Lord who created

96:2
Ayah 96:2
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
خَلَقَ
khalaqa
He created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
l-insāna
man
مِنْ
min
from
عَلَقٍ
ʿalaqin
a clinging substance
Created man from a clinging substance.

96:3
Ayah 96:3
ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ
ٱقْرَأْ
iq'ra
Read
وَرَبُّكَ
warabbuka
and your Lord
ٱلْأَكْرَمُ
l-akramu
(is) the Most Generous
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

96:4
Ayah 96:4
ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
The One Who
عَلَّمَ
ʿallama
taught
بِٱلْقَلَمِ
bil-qalami
by the pen
Who taught by the pen

96:5
Ayah 96:5
عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
عَلَّمَ
ʿallama
Taught
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
l-insāna
man
مَا
what
لَمْ
lam
not
يَعْلَمْ
yaʿlam
he knew
Taught man that which he knew not.

96:6
Ayah 96:6
كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ
كَلَّآ
kallā
Nay
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ
l-insāna
man
لَيَطْغَىٰٓ
layaṭghā
surely transgresses
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

96:7
Ayah 96:7
أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ
أَن
an
That
رَّءَاهُ
raāhu
he sees himself
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ
is'taghnā
self-sufficient
Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

96:8
Ayah 96:8
إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ
إِنَّ
inna
Indeed
إِلَىٰ
ilā
to
رَبِّكَ
rabbika
your Lord
ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ
l-ruj'ʿā
(is) the return
Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

96:9
Ayah 96:9
أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ
أَرَءَيْتَ
ara-ayta
Have you seen
ٱلَّذِى
alladhī
the one who
يَنْهَىٰ
yanhā
forbids
Have you seen the one who forbids

96:10
Ayah 96:10
عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ
عَبْدًا
ʿabdan
A slave
إِذَا
idhā
when
صَلَّىٰٓ
ṣallā
he prays
A servant when he prays?

96:11
Ayah 96:11
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَ
ara-ayta
Have you seen
إِن
in
if
كَانَ
kāna
he is
عَلَى
ʿalā
upon
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
l-hudā
[the] guidance
Have you seen if he is upon guidance

96:12
Ayah 96:12
أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ
أَوْ
aw
Or
أَمَرَ
amara
he enjoins
بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ
bil-taqwā
[of the] righteousness
Or enjoins righteousness?

96:13
Ayah 96:13
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَ
ara-ayta
Have you seen
إِن
in
if
كَذَّبَ
kadhaba
he denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
watawallā
and turns away
Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

96:14
Ayah 96:14
أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
أَلَمْ
alam
Does not
يَعْلَم
yaʿlam
he know
بِأَنَّ
bi-anna
that
ٱللَّهَ
l-laha
Allah
يَرَىٰ
yarā
sees
Does he not know that Allāh sees?

96:15
Ayah 96:15
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
لَئِن
la-in
If
لَّمْ
lam
not
يَنتَهِ
yantahi
he desists
لَنَسْفَعًۢا
lanasfaʿan
surely We will drag him
بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
bil-nāṣiyati
by the forelock
No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock1

96:16
Ayah 96:16
نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ
نَاصِيَةٍ
nāṣiyatin
A forelock
كَـٰذِبَةٍ
kādhibatin
lying
خَاطِئَةٍ
khāṭi-atin
sinful
A lying, sinning forelock.

96:17
Ayah 96:17
فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ
فَلْيَدْعُ
falyadʿu
Then let him call
نَادِيَهُۥ
nādiyahu
his associates
Then let him call his associates;

96:18
Ayah 96:18
سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
سَنَدْعُ
sanadʿu
We will call
ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
l-zabāniyata
the Angels of Hell
We will call the angels of Hell.1

96:19
Ayah 96:19
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩
كَلَّا
kallā
Nay
لَا
(Do) not
تُطِعْهُ
tuṭiʿ'hu
obey him
وَٱسْجُدْ
wa-us'jud
But prostrate
وَٱقْتَرِب
wa-iq'tarib
and draw near (to Allah)
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
